06/03/1996 - 00007872CITY OF FRIDLEY PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING - JUNE 3, 1996 CALL TO ORDER: Chairperson Kondrick called the June 3, 1996 Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting to order at 7:20 p.m. ROLL CALL: Members Present Others Present Dave Kondrick Sue Price Marcy Sibell Dick Young Tim Solberg 7ack Kirk, Director of Recreation & Natural Resources Paul Lawrence, Public Works Superintendent APPROVAL OF MAY 6, 1996 PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES. MOTION by Ms. Price, seconded by Ms. Sibell to approve the minutes of the May 6, 1996 meeting of the Parks & Recreation Commission as written. UPON A VOICE VOTE, ALL MEMBERS VOTING AYE, CHAIRPERSON KONDRICK DECLARED THE MOTION CARRIED. APPROVAL OF PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION AGENDA FOR JUNE 3, 1996. Mr. Kirk submitted a request for use of the showmobile by the Grove Square Merchants Association as an additional item. MOTION by Mr. Young, seconded by Mr. Solberg to approve the agenda as amended. UPON A VOICE VOTE, ALL MEMBERS VOTING AYE, CHAIRPERSON KONDRICK DECLARED THE MOTION CARRIED. 1. STAFF REPORT a. Program Update Mr. Kirk called attention to the item of the new Springbrook Nature Center park sign that was included with the Program Update. He also called attention to the Lions Club's construction of the sand volleyball courts at Moore Lake Beach that is currently underway and should be completed by the '49er Days celebration. On Thursday, June 13th the three winning bands from the Battle of the Bands contest will be competing for the championship at the Plaza area as a'49er Days event. b. Park Maintenance Report Mr. Lawrence gave the Commission Members a copy of the Park Maintenance Report as submitted by Dave Lindquist, Parks Supervisor, dated May 31, 1996. The report outlines the various areas that the Parks employees have been working on in preparation for the summer park use and Recreation program activities. John Gargaro Fields Dedication Commission members received in their packets a flyer on the dedication of the John Gargaro fields at Community Park fields #5 &#6 scheduled for June 14, 1996 at 5:30 p.m. All Commission Members are invited. Parks & Recreation Chairperson, Dave Kondrick, will serve as master of ceremonies for the event. d. Fridley'49er Days Mr. Kirk reported that the plans are coming along for the '49er Days events. The customary kick-off of the '49er Days is the annual parade which will be held on Thursday, June 13th starting at 6:30 p.m. There are events on the Plaza area on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. The carnival will run through Sunday evenmg. e. Community Activity Center Mr. Kirk reported that the School District had approached the City on cooperating with them with some minimal improvements to the Community Education Center. This could help meet the needs of the seniors for a Senior Center and improve some of the facilities for use by youth and community as a whole. The City Council has directed staffto look into this proposal to come back with potential costs and impact upon the programming needs of the Recreation Department. Mr. Kirk will bring back further details at a future meeting. f. New Playground Equipment The new playground equipment has now been ordered. Bids for the Logan Park and Summit Square Park playground equipment went to Earl F. Andersen Company with the Landscape Structures line of equipment, and bids on the Springbrook, Harris Lake, Terrace and 7ay Parks equipment went to Flanagan Sales with the Little Tikes line of play equipment. It is going to take several weeks for the equipment to arrive. The scheduled installation deadline is August 15th. g. Sand Volleyball Courts The Commission toured the sand volleyball courts as part of the park tour prior to the meeting. The materials and much of the labor is being supplied by the Fridley Lions Club. 2. NEW BUSINESS a. Minneapolis Downtown Council - Showmobile Request MOTION by Mr. Solberg, seconded by Mr. Young to approve the request for use of the showmobile by the Minneapolis Downtown Council. UPON A VOICE VOTE, ALL MEMBERS VOTING AYE, CHAIRPERSON KONDRICK DECLARED THE MOTION CARRIED. b. Grove Square Merchants Association - Showmobile Request MOTION by Mr. Solberg, seconded by Mr. Young to approve the request for use of the showmobile by the Grove Square Merchants Association. UPON A VOICE VOTE, ALL MEMBERS VOTING AYE, CHAIRPERSON KONDRICK DECLARED THE MOTION CARRIED. Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting - June 3, 1996 Page 3 3. OTHER BUSINESS a. The ne�t meeting of the Parks & Recreation Commission is being scheduled for August 5, 1996. the Commission Members also requested that we have an additional tour prior to that meeting to look at some of the 1996 summer improvements in the parks. MOTION by Ms. Price, seconded by Mr. Young to adjourn the meeting at 8:00 p.m. UPON A VOICE VOTE, ALL MEMBERS VOTING AYE, CHAIRPERSON KONDRICK DECLARED THE MOTION CARRIED AND THE J UNE 3, 1996 MEETING ADJOURNED.
