2. NEW BUSINESS
a. Request by Fridley School District to use Commons Park for Cyclocross event on
November 1, 2009
Mr. Kirk stated that he has received a request from a Fridley Middle School physical education
teacher, Bryan Butts, to use a part of Commons Park for a fundraiser event this fall. They
would like to run a cyclocross event using both the middle school athletic fields and some of
Commons Park. Cyclocross is a form of bike racing that is a combination of a bike road race
and cross country biking. The race would start and finish on the middle school cinder track,
but would also include riding over some turf areas. The race route would include the bikers
traveling along the youth football field and then heading down the hill near the playground
equipment in Commons. They would then turn south and proceed to the base of the sliding
hill.
Parks and Recreation Commission Meetinq - June 1, 2009 Paqe 2
Mr. Kirk continued that the bikers would get off their bikes at the base of the sliding hill and
actually carry their bikes to the top, where they would remount the bikes and proceed riding
back to the middle school track.
Mr. Kirk further stated that there are different levels of competition in this type of event and the
middle school physical education staff would like to get local kids involved in a ride on a
modified course. The event would be held on Sunday, November 1, 2009.
Mr. Kirk stated he is supportive of this new idea for an event, but he did pose a couple of
questions to the school district staff. First, how is liability coverage for this event being
handled? The City should be protected and named as an additional insured on the insurance
policy for this event. Second, is the school district going to cover costs of repairs for any turf
damage to the park, in the event that damage does occur? The district staff will look into the
answers of those questions and get back to City staff. It sounds like the United States Cycling
Federation provides insurance for these types of events.
Mr. Kirk asked the Commission members if there were any additional questions they would
have or any concerns with the City cooperating on this event.
MOTION by Mr. Heintz, seconded by Ms. Barrett, to give preliminary approval to the Fridley
School District to use a portion of Commons Park to hold a cyclocross event on November 1,
2009, pending further details on the event that will be submitted to City staff.
