2. NEW BUSINESS
a. Request by Fridley School District to use Commons Park for Cyclocross event on
October 31, 2010
Mr. Kirk stated that he has received a request from a Fridley Middle School physical education
teacher, Bryan Butts, to use a part of Commons Park again this year for a fundraiser event
this fall. They would like to run a cyclocross event using both the middle school athletic fields
and some of Commons Park. Cyclocross is a form of bike racing that is a combination of a
bike road race and cross country biking. The race would start and finish on the middle school
cinder track, but would also include riding over some turf areas. The race route would include
the bikers traveling along the youth football field and then heading down the hill near the
playground equipment in Commons. They would then turn south, proceed to the base of the
sliding hill, and then head up the hill. They had their first event last year on November 1St and
it turned out well.
Mr. Kirk stated that last year he allowed the school district to use the warming house at
Commons as the race headquarters and he would be willing to do that again this year. The
event last year was well run.
Mr. Kirk stated that he would support approval for the event with the following stipulations:
1. The City be protected with liability insurance coverage for this event by the event
sponsors. Last year the insurance was provided by the United States Cycling Federation
and named the City as an additional insured.
2. The School District agree to cover costs related to any turf damage in the park that may
result from the event.
3. The School District agree to cover any additional costs related to the event such as
portable toilets and garbage dumpsters.
MOTION by Ms. Barrett, seconded by Mr. Heintz, to approve to the Fridley School District
request to use a portion of Commons Park to hold a cyclocross event on October 31, 2010,
with the stipulations outlined by staff.
