RES 1967-49 - 00010675RESOLUTION NO. 49 -1967
A RESOLUTION OPPOSING THE ESTABLISHMENT
OF MULTI PURPOSE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT.
BE IT RESOLVED, by the Council of the City of Fridley, Anoka County,
Minnesota, as follows:
WHEREAS, a number of bills have been introduced in the 1967 Minnesota
Legislature, which bills consider various methods of dealing with area -wide
metropolitan problems, including the establishment of a multipurpose metro-
politan government and the establishment of a coordinating council; and
WHEREAS, the Council recognizes that certain area -wide problems require
coordination among the various municipalities; and
WHEREAS, the Council believes that the authority over these problems
should remain in the State Legislature.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Fridley City Council is opposed
to the creation of a metropolitan unit of government having multipurpose
authority, particularly authority to tax or zone property within the various
municipalities and is also opposed to the termination of the local consent
requirements.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Fridley City Council favors in principle
those legislative bills that would expand the authority of the county commissioners
to coordinate activities within the municipalities within their county and
_ among the various counties.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Fridley City Council also favors the
establishment of a metropolitan coordinating council with members to be
elected by the electorate based on a current population basis.
ADOPTED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FRIDLEY THIS 8TH DAY OF MARCH, 1967.
