A RESOLUTION REQUESTING THE MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF
TRANSPORTATION TO INSTALL TRAFFIC SIGNALS AT THE
INTERSECTION OF TH 47 (UNIVERSITY AVENUE) AND 69TH
AVENUE NE
WHEREAS, the City of Fridley is very concerned with the dangerous
traffic situation which exists at the intersection of Trunk Highway 47
and 69th Avenue NE; and
WHEREAS, the crossover at 69th Avenue is the only outlet for a large
residential area on the west side of TH 47 (University Avenue NE); and
WHEREAS, there is a considerable amount of traffic generated due to
activities in Locke Park and Columbia Ice Arena on the east side TH 47; and
WHEREAS, this intersection is within the area associated with the
land acquisition along Rice Creek for the proposed development of a regional
trail system; and
WHEREAS, there is only a narrow space in the crossover section of the
highway between the main traffic lanes at this intersection; and
WHEREAS, there have been numerous accidents at this intersection.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of
Fridley that the City feels there is an immediate need for the installation
of signals at the intersection of Trunk Highway #47 and 69th Avenue NE and
hereby requests the Minnesota Department of Transportation to proceed with
the installation during the 1979 construction year.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City of Fridley will be willing to
bear their proportionate share of the traffic signal improvement at this
intersection. Further, the City of Fridley will be willing to pay the
total construction cost for the signalization at this time, if the Minnesota
Department of Transportation agrees to reimburse the City of Fridley for
their share of the cost within the next five years.
