We have conducted a soil exploration and foundation
review for the referenced project. We are transmitting
five copies of our report.
About 50% of the soil samples will be held at this office
for one month and will then be discarded unless we are
notified to hold them for a longer period of time.

&EPORT OF SOIL EXPLORATION
PROPOSED RESIDENCE AT 7776 ALDEN WAY
FRIDLEY, MINNESOTA
#120-3082
INTRODUCTION
Construction of a residence for Mr Dick Netz is contemplated along the east
side of the Mississippi River in Fridley, Minnesota. A soil exploration
was conducted in the vicinity of the proposed residence. The soil explora-
tion consisted of soil test borings made at the site, and an examination of
soil samples obtained during the field drilling program.
This report presents the results of the drilling program, and it also presents
our recommendations based on a review of the field results and examination
of the soil samples.
SITE AND SOIL CONDTTIONS
The site explored is a vacant lot at 7776 Alden Way in Fridley, Minnesota.
The site fronts on the east side of the Mississippi River. The site slopes
steeply towards the river with appxoximately 23' of relief between the
street,Alden Way,and the river.
The generalized soil profile consists primarily of alluvial sands and silty
sands at approximate elevation 86-88, (based on our assumed bench mark).
Overlying the alluvial sands is a thin layer of topsoil. The surface of
the site is covered with a varying depth of loose fill. The depth of fill
in the vicinity of our borings is approximately 8'. The depth of fill
soi exxoRation
W
Page Two - #120-3082
appears to be somewhat less over the rest of the site. Ground water was not
encountered in our borings.
ENGINEERING REVIEW
The proposed residence will be constructed on spread and/or continuos wall
footings. We recommend that the footings be carried down through the fill
and founded on the native sands. We further recommend that a qualified soil
engineering technician look at the finished footing excavations to ascertain
that loose soils have been removed. Footings founded in the alluvial sands
should be proportioned to have a maximum footing to soil contact pressure
of 2500 pounds per foot (psf).
FIELD EXPLORATION METHODS
General
An engineer from our office accompanied Dick Netz to the site April 28 in
order to locate the test borings. Two locations were staked within the
proposed building area and in what appeared to be the deepest part of the
fill. The two soil test borings were made on May 1, 1978. The borings were
put down at the locations shown on the attached sketch. The surface elevations
were referenced to the top of a fire hydrant located at the intersection of
Alden Way and Craigbrook Way, as shown on the sketch, taken as 100.0' (an
assumed elevation).
Soil Sampling
Soil sampling was performed in accordance with ASTM: D 1586-67. Usin,g this
procedure a 2" O.D. split barrel sampler is driven into the soil by a 140
sot exrxoaation
aomw
Page Three - #120-3082
lb weight falling 30". After an initial set of 6", the number of blows re-
quired to drive the sampler an additional 12" is known as the penetration
resistance or N value. The N value is an index of the relative density of
cohesionless soils and the consistency of cohesive soils.
Soil Classification
As the samples were obtained in the field they were visually and manually
classified by a crew chief in accordance with ASTM: D 2488-69. Represent-
ative portions of all samples were then returned to the laboratory for
further examination and for verification of the field classification. Logs
of the borings indicating the depth and identification of the various strata,
the N value, water level information and pertinent information regarding the
method of maintaining and advancing the drill holes are attached. Charts
illustrating the soil classification procedure; the descriptive terminology
and symbols used on the boring logs are also attached.
REMARKS
The recommendations and/or suggestions contained in this repart are our
opinions based on data which are assumed to be representative of the site
explored; but because the area of the borings in relation to the entire
area is very small, and for other reasons,we do not warrant conditions
below the depths of our borings, or that the strata logged from our borings
are necessarily typical of the entire site. hereb cerri thatthis i

WATER LEVEL
SYMBOL —
Water levels shown on the boring logs are the levels measured in the borings at the time
end under the conditions indicated. In sand, the indicated levels can be considered
reliable ground water levels. In clay soil, it is not possible to determine the ground
water level within the normat scope of a test boring investigation, except where lenses
a layers of more pervious waterbearing soil are present and then a long period of time
mey be necessary to reach equilibritxn. Therefore, the position of the water level symbol
for cohesive or mixed texture soils may not indicate the true level of the ground water
table. The available vrater Ievet infomation is given at the bottom of the log sheet.

Subj: Site Visit
Proposed Residence at 7776 Alden Way
Fridley, Minnesota
#120-3082
This letter summarizes the site visit I made to your proposed
residenct at 7776 Alden Way on D9ay 25, 1978. I visited the site
to observe the excavation operations in progress. The excavation
for the building basement and foundation was near completion.
Where the excavation is complete the depth is sufficient to insure
that the footings are bearing on natural sands. I discussed the
situation briefly with you and the building inspector and pointed
out that all the footings must be constructed in the reddish-brown
natural sands.
The building inspector said he would again check the finished
footing excavations to insure that the natural sands are exposed.
In particular, he should inspect the southwest corner of the house
where the excavation was not finished at the time of my site visit.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us.
Very truly ours
