Two soil test borings were made on April 6, 1976� The bor�ngs
were put down at th� lo�ation� shown an the att�ched sketch:

Soil sampling was performed in accordance with ASTM: D 1587-67�
Using this procedure, a 2" O�D- split barrel samp2er is driven
int.o the soil by a 140 lb weight falling 30". After an initiai

As the samples we�e obtained in the field, they were visually and manually
c.lassified by the crew chief in accordance with ASTMa D 2488-69� Represen-
tative portions o� all �amples we�e then returned to the laboratory for
further examination and fo� veri�ication of the field classificationo Logs
of the borings indicating the depth and identification of the various strata,
the N value, water level in�ormation and pertinent information regarding the
method of maintaining and advancing the drill holes a�e attached. Charts
illustrating the soil classification procedure, the desc�iptive te�minology
and symbols used on the boring logs are also attached�
The logs of the bo�ings show fill to a depth of about 13?' at boring 1 and
13' at borgng 2, This fill is primarily silty sand or a mixture of sand and
silty sand although it does contain a little clay below about 10' at boring 1.
Also, there were a few traces of wood within the fill at boring 2. The fill
was then unde�lain with a layer of da�ker colored silty sand to a depth of
about 14' at these two borings. Silty sand or sand then completes the soil
profile to the depths of these bo�ings. The penetration resistance (N value)
indicates the density of the �ohesionless soil ranges from ve�y loo�e to
looseo The penetration resistance of the fill is quite variable and was �e�y
low in the upper portion of bor°ing 1 and below about 6' at boring 2.
No gr°ound water ente�ed th�se borings at the time this wark was done� Boih
seasonal and yearly fluctuata�ns oi the ground water table can be �xpected�

placed in lifts no greater than �an be compacted fo� their entire thickness
with the type of material and comp�ction equipment being used: 'I'he engine�r�d

Water levels shown on the boring logs are the levels measured in the borings at the time
and under the conditions indicated. In sand, the indicated levels can be considered
reliable ground water levels. In clay soil, it is not possible to determine the ground
water level within the normal scope of a test boring investigation, except where lenses
or layers of more pervious waterbearing soil are present and then a long period of time
may be necessary to reach equilibrium. Therefore, the position of the water level symbol
for cohesive or mixed texture soils may not indicate the true level of the ground water

INTRODUCTION
/
This report concerns the recent soils investigation conducted by our firm at the proposed
residence. We received authorization for this work from you on April 21, 1976.
A considerable depth of loosely placed fill existed in the area for the proposed house.
We were requested to evaluate an unexcavated portion of the old fill, determine the size
of the required excavation oversize and perform hand auger probes to evaluate the
natural soil-old fill interface. After compaction operations, we were to take density
tests in the unexcavated portion of the old fill and in the new controlled fill placed
in the building area.
CONCLUSIONS
Based on the results of our inspection and density testing, it is our opinion the soil
foundation system at the above referenced project will adequately support the structural
loads without resulting in detrimental settlement.
BUILDING PLANS
We understand that a two-story, 26' x 42' single family residence is to be constructed
at the project site. A tuck-under garage will comprise a portion of the lower level
floor.
The foundation plan is to excavate all but the final 3.5' of old fill, surface compact
the bottom of the excavation, place controlled fill to finished floor elevation and then
subcut for footings. The proposed house will have a finished floor elevation at about
the present ground surface with frost footings placed 3' to 4' below. The proposed house
foundation will then be supported on the newly placed fill. We have no information
regarding the foundation loads, but assume they will be relatively light (less than 1500
psf).
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The results of a preliminary soil investigation conducted at the site by Soil Exploration
Co and reported to you on April 9, 1976, were available for our use during this investi-
gation. This report indicated that about 13' of previously placed fill consisting of mostly
silty sand with mixtures of sand and clay overlaid natural coarse alluvial soils. The
fill soils are highly variable in density, but appear to be relatively free of debris and
organic matter. The natural alluvial soils consist of loose to very loose silty sand
and sand. A thin layer of darker colored silty sand, probably topsoil, overlies the

alluvial soils. Surface elevations at the borings ranged from 113.9' at bor7ng #1 to
113.1' at boring #2.
INVESTIGATION METHODS AND RESULTS
On April 21, 1976, we performed a visual inspection of the building excavation. The
exposed soils were visually and manually classified in accordance with the Unified
Soil Classification System and estimates were made of their strength properties. Several
shallow hand auger borings were put down to further determine local subsurface soil condi-
tions. Several in-place moisture-density tests were performed. As specified, these
tests were evaluated according to the moisture-density relation of soil as designated by
ASTM:D698-70 (Standard Proctor Method). The results of these tests are attached.
During our on-site visual inspection, we determined oversize requirements and evaluated
the depth, density and composition of the old fill remaining in the house area. At the
time of this inspection, the excavation was a little more than 9' below the surface.
From our understanding the foundation plan (footings are to be placed a minimum of 3' below
the existing ground surface), we would require 6' of lateral oversize about the building
foundations. That is, 1' of excavation oversize beyond the outside edge of all perimeter
footings. From information supplied by your field personnel, the house will have a 30'
setback from the front property line and a 12' side yard setback from the north property
line. Utilizing this information, we determined that an appropriate excavation oversize
was maintained about the building perimeter foundation from property line stakes placed
by others.
From several hand auger probes placed about the excavation, we also determined that ap-
proximately 3' of clean granular fill existed at the bottom of the excavation. A thin
layer of dark brown silty sand was encountered directly below the fill soils. This dark
brown silty sand was probably the lower portion of the topsoil horizon, with the natural
silty sands encountered directly below. Some minor amounts of roots, but no sod was
apparent in the dark brown soil. The granular fill left in-place was surface compacted.
Several density tests were performed within the old fill left in the excavation and as
the fill was being placed in a controlled manner. The results of these tests indicate
all fill soils were well compacted.
COMMENTS
In order to properly evaluate the foundation soils at a building site, it is imperative
for our firm to know exactly where the building will be placed, its size and the elevation

of the foundation elements. Without this information, we cannot assure that the prepartory
foundation earthwork is adequate.
This project data is especially critical in situations where the excavation extends below
the footing grade and compacted fill will be required to attain building elevations. In
these situations, the excavation would require lateral oversizing to provide suitable
lateral distribution of the footing loads.
Property lines stakes were provide for our use on the site to indicate the building
location and size. It must be recognized that Twin City Testing and Engineering Laboratory
Inc does not practice in the field of surveying. We, therefore, must rely on staking
by others.
If the construction is redesigned or otherwise moved subsequent to our inspection, we
should be informed so our firm can assess if additional inspection work is required,
or suggest sound engineering alternatives. We cannot be responsible for any soil founda-
tion system if the structure has been relocated with respect to the excavation subsequent
to our inspection.

SECTION 2. The Inspector of �uildings shall, before issuing permits �or the
erecti'on of any bitilding or structure, or for any addition to any existing
building or structure, or for any alteration or repairs to any existing
building or structure, upon application thereiore, require the payment by the
applicant for such pennit o£ fees to the amount herein below set forth and in
the manner herein provided to-wit:
UNIFORM BUILDING CODE: �pe 1, 2& 4-$2.15 for each one thousand cubic
feet, or fxaction thereof, in such cubical contents. Type 3& S-$1.85 for
each one thousand cubic feet.
ADDITIONAL INFOR�SATION
For the purpose of computinb fees for building permits, the cubical contents
of: any,building or addition, is determined by multiplying the ground area
cover�d;from a point six (6) inches below the floor line of the basement

VERIFICATION OF FOUNDATION
NOTE: Permits for construction will be issued a minimum of 24 hours fxom �he
time of application, to allow for pxoper review of the proposed structure and

A Certified Survey of the lot, showing the location of the foundation, once iL-
has been constructed, �ai_11 be xequired before proceeding with the framinb.

A final inspection on September 24, 1976 of the above address noted the
following items that must be completed before the construction can be
finaled out;
l. Provide a verifying survey
2. Post house numbers on structure
3. Provide guard and handrails on the front step
4. Provide frost cover on north wall near back of house the same as
the front
5. Provide a door closer on the door between house and garage
6. Provide guard and handrails on inside of house
7. Insulate exposed walls in basement
8. Repair firewall in garage
9. Provide hard surface driveway
10. Provide sod in the front and side yards
We will expect items 1 through 8 to be completed by October 11, 1976 or
prior to occupancy and items 9 and 10 to be completed by October 25, 1976.
If any problems arise that will prevent you from completing t:�ese items
by the appointed dates, please contact us as reinspections will be
scheduled for on or about the appointed dates to determiiie compliance.
