I. Subject: Ahrens Chimney Lining.
II. Description: The Ahrens chimney lining is designed for masonry
chimneys serving residential-type appliances. The system involves a two-
coat application of a proprietary cementitious mixture. The first coat
consists of three 55-pound baes of Ahrens first liner aggregate, one bag of
Tvpe II portland cement, 3 ounces of Ahrenol proprietary admixture and
1'/ eallons of water. The Ahrens aggregate and cement are �rst mixed to an
even blend in a pan-rype mixer. The Ahrenol liquid and water are mixed in a
separate container and the solution gradually added to the dry mix. The
resulting mixture has an aimost zero slump but is plastic enough to mold
into shapes. Using the Ahrens application bell, the tirst coat is applied to a
minimum thickness of 1'/z inch. The second coat consists of one 53-pound
bag of the Ahrens second liner material mixed with 2.25 gallons of water.
After thorough mixine, the plastic solution is allowed to stand for 30
minutes to permit chemical interaction and then applied over the tirst liner
to a'/e-inch thickness after allowing the first liner to cure for a minimum of
eight hours. After application of the second coat, the chimney is cured for a
minimum 21-day period prior to firing. The first liner material has a dry
density of 55 pcf and the second liner has a dry density of 70.5 pcf. The
composite liner material has a minimum 28-day compressive strength of
I500 psi when tested in accordance with ASTM Method C 513.
Identification: The first liner, second liner and the Ahrenol fluid con-
tainers are each marked by a label containing the manufacturer's name,
address, product name, ICBO research report number and a note dicecting
the approved installer to follow the manufacturer's installation inswctions.
III. Evidence Submitted: Compressive strength, freeze-thaw,
pyrometric cone equivalence, results of tests conducted in accordance with
applicable portions of Undenvriters Laboratories Inc. Standard No. 103
and installation inswctions are submitted.
Findings
IV. Findings: That the Ahrens Chimney Lining system is an alter-
nate to that speciCed in Section 3703 (d) of the 1982 Uniform Building
Code for use with masonry chimneys serving residential-type
appliances, subject to the following conditions:
1. The material is installed in accordance with this report and the
manufacturer's instructions.
2. Each instailation will have a card filed with the building depart-
ment giving the address and date of the installation and the
applicator's name and address.
3. Installation is by an applicator trained and approved by Ahrens
Chimney Techniques, Inc.
4. Prior to installation,.the chimneys are inspected to assun that
the required chimney flue areas are maintained.

Liner System for Masonry Chimney
DESCRIPTLON AND USE OF PRODUCT
The Ahrens Chimney Lining System is a masonry chim-
ney liner having two individual liner applications. The
first liner is a masonry mix that is applied by use of a
vibrating bell. The bell is lowered into the chimney and
the masonry mix is poured on top of the bell. The vibrat-
ing bell is winched up the flue at a rate of 1 foot every 2
minutes. A minimum of 1�i4" of masonry mix is forced
horizontally to the walls of the chimney by the vibrating
bell. After first liner application, the chimney is plugged
at the top and bottom with a wet sponge for eight hours.
The second line is Ahrens elixir coating. This porcellane-
ous coating is applied with a cylindrical sponge. The
sponge is placed in the top of the chimney and the Elixir is
poured over it. The weight of the elixir forces the sponge
down the chimney while applying the coating.
TEST RESULTS
Report of tests on Ahrens Chimney Lining System, Job.
No. 30643-1, dated January 14, 1983 by Arnold Greene
Testing Laboratories, Inc. An uniined chimney was con-
structed of cement blocks I S-5/ 8" square with a 9-1 / 8"
square t7ue. This was lined with a proprietary mixture
which is applied to the interior in a stiff consistency by
drawing an electric powered vibratimg core upward inside
the flue as the mixture is poured down from the top of the
chimney.
After setting overnight, this mixture was coated with the
Elixir Coating applied with a sponge cylinder. After a
seasoning period the flue liner was tested in accordance
with ANSI/ UL 103. The tests conducted were the ther-
mal shock test, 1000° F flue gas temperature test, 1400° F
flue gas temperature test, 1700° F flue gas temperature
test, 2100° F flue gas temperature test, draft test, resist-
ance to action of acids test, and the freezing and thawing
of non-metallic materials absorbing water test. The liner
passed all tests.
This is to inform you that the Ahrens Chimney System
has successfully passed all U.L. 103 H.T. testin�. The
system is now currently U.L, listed with #68M4.
