At the request of Mr. Tom Brickner and Mr. Ron Holden, we
examined the foundation soils and water table conditions on the
abave captioned lot. The soils were found to be natural sandy
clay, typical of the subsoil found on adjacent lots.
Based on previous work in this area, we feel the draintile
along the back of lot 29 should be extended to the East along
th back of lot 28 and then to another sump on the East lot line
of lot 28. This will complete a draintile loop that will enclose
lots 28 and 29 and cut off ground'water flowing along the top of
this sandy clay soil. As with lot 29, this tile system across
the back must be notched into the clay to be effective and the
bottom of the sump should be in sandy soil.
We also recomnend tiling the house inside and outside of
the footings with the lines connected through the wll and into
a sump in the basement. The footings should have two #4 rein-
forcement bars to prevent damage from differential settlements
that may occur if underlying clay soils are nonuniform.
If you should have any questions, please call:

This report concerns our observations of the soil conditions for the planned addition to the residence at
1680 Camelot Lane in Fridley, Minnesota. Our work was performed at the request of Mr Mike Leuer of
M. L. Construction. The scope of work we were authorized to perform was limited to the following items:
1.
2.
3.
Observe the soils exposed in completed foundation excavations.
Perform shallow hand auger borings within the excavated areas.
Judge whether the observed soils are suitable for structural support.
CONCLUSIONS:
Based on our observations and shallow hand auger borings, it is our opinion the soils exposed in the
completed foundation excavations consisted of naturally deposited soils. The majority of these soils, in the
condition observed, were judged to be suitable for support of the planned residential addition. The surficial
few inches of the exposed cohesive soils had become softened due to the presence of standing water. We
recommended these soft surficial soils be hand excavated just prior to placement of foundation concrete.
Within the majority of the area where excavation extended below foundation grade, a minimum oversize of
approumately 1' or slightly more was obtained. However, the naturally deposited sandy clay and clayey
sand exposed within the face of the excavation was judged to be suitable for lateral support of foundation
loadings. At the time of our observation, we did recommend that additional excavation be performed along
the east edge of the eastern foundation to provide a minimal lateral oversize of 2'.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

PAGE: 2
The subsurface soils in this area appear to contain significant quantities of subsurface water. Due to the
presence of this water, it is our opinion the sandy clay and clayey sand will be susceptible to moisture-
volume expansion upon freezing. We understand the addition will be heated. In order to further minimize
the potential for adfreeze to the vertical faces of the below grade masonry construction, we recommend that
the following construction procedures be considered for the planned construction:
1.
2.
Backfill adjacent to the below grade masonry should consist of free-draining sand-
gravel or washed aggregate.
Perforated draintile should be placed within the free-draining sand-gravel and
provided with suitable discharge.
3. The exterior faces of the below grade masonry should be covered with insulation
board or poly sheeting to minimize potential for adhesion of potentially frozen soils
to the masonry surface.
We observed the presence of soft fill and/or topsoil within portions of the floor slab area. We recommend
these compressible materials be removed and replaced with compacted granular fill.
PROTECT INFORMATION:
The construction in progress will consist of a single-story, slab-on-grade addition to the south side of the
existing residence. The addition will have overall dimensions of about 16' x 28'. The addition will be
supported upon normal spread footings placed at minimum frost protection depth. We have no information
regarding the actual foundation loads, but assume they will be less than 1500 psf, as is typical for this type
of construction.
No deep penetration borings have been put down in conjunction
Therefore, we cannot warrant soil conditions below the depths of
competent soils appeared to be present in the excavation bottoms
softer/looser compressible soils might be present at depth.
OBSERVATION METHODS AND RESULTS:

our shallow hand auger borings. Although
, this does not eliminate the possibility that
On October 23, 1990, we performed a site visit to observe the soils exposed within the completed
foundation excavations. Within the excavated foundation trenches, several shallow hand auger borings were
put down to aid in depicting local subsurface soil conditions. The eosed soils and those retrieved by the
hand auger borings were classified in general accordance with ASTM:D 2488. Estimates were made of their
strength properties.

Along the western foundation wall and the majority of the southern wall, except the eastern 8' to 10', the
exposed soils consisted of clayey sand judged to be naturally deposited. These soils were judged to be in
a soft to medium dense condition, suitable for support of anticipated foundation loadings. In some areas,
the surficial few inches of the naturally deposited soils had become softened due to subsurface water
intrusion. We recommended the surficial softened soils be hand excavated just prior to placement of
concrete foundation.
Along the east wall, and at the southeast comer of the addition, the naturally deposited clayey sands were
judged to be in a soft to very soft condition. We recommended these soft soils be removed from the
planned foundation area to depths required to expose more competent bearing materials. Since subsurface
water will likely enter this deeper excavation, we reconunended that a washed gravel fill be placed and
compacted within the completed excavation to re-establish planned foundation grade.
On October 24, 1990, we again visited the site. During this site visit, excavation of the soft clayey sands
at the southeast building corner and along the eastern building line was completed. The excavation
generally extended to a depth ranging from 3' to 3 1/2' below planned foundation grade. The eacposed
clayey sand and sandy lean clay within the bottom of the excavation was judged to be suitable for support
of aggregate fill and foundation loadings. At the time of our site visit, a small amount of hand excavation
work remained to be performed adjacent to the foundation at the southeast corner of the existing residence.
No observation was requested or performed at completion of this small amount of excavation.
Along the majority of the length of the trench excavation which extended below foundation grade, a very
minimal lateral excavation oversize of about 1' or slightly more was obtained. The soils exposed within the
lower portions of the faces of the trench excavation consisted of naturally deposited clayey sand judged to
be suitable for support of lateral loads induced by the foundation construction. Therefore, in our opinion,
this minimal oversize should be suitable. Along the eastern edge of the central portion of the eastern
foundation, somewhat softer clayey sands were exposed within the side of the excavation. Therefore, we
recommended the excavation in this area be extended laterally to provide a lateral oversize of 2' beyond
the edge of the planned foundation.
We were informed that, as recommended, washed aggregate would be placed within the excavated area to
establish foundation grade. We were informed the thickness of the washed aggregate fill would range from
a minimum of about 1 1/2' to a maximum of 3'. We recommended the washed aggregate fill be compacted
into place with repeated impacts from the bucket of the excavation backhoe.
REMARKS:
It must be recognized that we do not practice in the field of surveying. Therefore, we must rely on
elevation and location information provided by others. If the construction is redesigned or otherwise moved
subsequent to our work, we should be informed so our firm can assess if additional engineering observation
is required or suggest engineering alternatives.

PRECAUTTONS FOR EXCAVA'I'iITG AND REFILLING DURIITG COLD WEATHER
The winter season in this area presents specific pmblema for foundation construction. Sos which
are illowed to freeu nndergo a moisture wlume expansion, rtsulting in s bss of density. These
frosttxpanded soils will consotidate upon thawing, ciusing settkment of any structure supported
on them. To prevnt this settkment, frost hould not be allowed to penetrate into the wils br
bw any proposed structure.
Iieally, vinter excavadon should ix lunited to sreas simall enough to be refilkd to s grade higher
than footin grade on the same day. Typically, these areas should be filled to iloor grade. Trench-
ing tck down to unfmun soils for fonndation construction can then be performed just prior to
footing placxment. The excavated trenches should be protected from freezing by mws of in-
wlating or heating during foundation constrction. BBCkfiIling of the fonndation trenchea should
be performed immediately after the below$rade foundation conatrnction is finished. In addition,
any interior footings, or footings desigxd w►ithout frost protcction thould Ix extended below
irost depth, ankss adequate precautions are takn to prevent froat intrusion tmtil the building
cu ie encbsed and heated.
In many cases, final grade csnnot be attainod in one day's time, even though small areas are work-
ed. In the event final grade cannot be attained in one day's time, frost can be expected to devrlop
overnight. The depth of frost penetration can ix minimiud by kaving a layer of boae so on top
of the compacted material overnight. However. any frost which forms in this loose Lyer, or enow
vhich accumulates, should ix compktely removed from the fill uea prior to compaction and ad-
3itional soil placement. Froun soils, or soils containing froun material or mow hould never be
ned as fill materiaL
After the Btructure has been encbsed, aD floor slab areas thould be snbjected to ampk periods
of heating to allow thswing of the soil sytem. Alternatively, tht froun oils can be compktely
removrd and de replaced with an engineered fdl. The floor dab areas ahould be checked st ran-
dom and representative bcations for cemnant areas of frost, and denaity tests honld be performed
to document fll compution prior to tab pboement.
Due to the potential probkms assoclated w+ith fill plaotment during oold veather. uty filling
operadon: hould be nionitored by a full-time, onsite oils technician. FuU-time monitoring
aids in detecting aress of froun material, or potential problems with froztn material w►ithin
the fill, w that appropriate measurea can be taken. T6e choioe of fill material is particularly
important during cold weather, sinoe ckan ranulsr iill materials can be plscxd and compacted
mon efficientty than dtty or clayey a►ils. In addition, reater tnagnitudes of heaving can be
expccted with freezing of the more frost susceptibk dlts sad cLys.
