In receirt years there h�s been an increasi ng concem about the quafity of our air. Much of the blame for poor air quality has
been pfaced on the buming pf wood fon c� me heating. In order ta improve this situation we at Quadra-�ire have developed
cleaner burning inserts that surpass the String�nt requirements for emissior+s established 6y our goveming agencies. Your
Bodega Bay Wood Insert, like any other a�pliance, must be praperly operated in order to ensure that they peiform the way
they are designed to pertorm. Improper �peration and mainten�nCe m�y Cause any wood buming unit to release more
particulate, adverseiy affec�ing the enviroiiment.
• Th� s sMry of fhe Thr�ee 8urning Stages ...
It helps to know a littie abocrt the actval bur n proCess, whiCh ent�iis three discernible buming stages. The first stage is called
the kindling stage. puring this stege the fuel reaches the boiting temperature of water, 212°F e�aporating the moisture
found to some degree in all wood.
Because tt�e process takes he.�t from the insert durir►g th9s initiai dry+ng staqe, each new Ioad of wood reduces the chanoes
for a good, clean bum. Forthis regson it is always best to burn dry, seasoned firewoad, and operate the controls properly.
The bottom controf on the right side of yc�ur insert is c8lfed the Start-Up Air Control and is used primariiy du�ing this flrst
kin��ing stage of buming.
During the secondary stage, the vw�oc! gives off �lammable gases which bum above the fuel wmkh b�ghi tlames. These
flames above the fuel must be maintained unfil the third stage to ensure proper buming. During this stage you may adjust
your insert t�or a low bum rafe. 7o achieve a low bum rate it is necessary to close down the air while sti11 maintaining some
flameg. If the flames tend to go out, the sE �tting is too 1ow. The Primary Cantrol, located 8bove the $tark-Up Air Cpntrol, will
assi� you in adjusting the inserC fnr a fow bum rate.
The third stage of b�ming is tFie charco� I stage. This happens when the flammable gases have been burned and th�
charco2l remains. The caals buming witl� hot blue flames is a naturally dean portion of the bum. It is very impartarrt to
reload your insert while enough Eively hot t oals remain in arder ta provide the amount of heat needed to dry and rekindle the
next load of wood. Open up both con#rols for a shoR whiie before reloading to liven up the coal bed. You shculd also break
up any I�rge chunks and distribule the ac�als so the new wood is laid on hot coals. Leave bott� cohtrois open (close the
Start-Up-Air after 15 minutes) unti( t�e ne�v wood ioad is buming well enough to maintain the secandary stagE of buming
and then set the Primary Gontrol to your c esired F�eat output setting.
START-Up AIR SYSTEM
The combustion air enters at the rear of t� e f�rebox thraugh the rear air tubes. This a�r supply is controlled by t}te Start-Up
Air Controi. See Figure iBA.
PRIMARYAIR SYSTEM
The primary air enters at the upper frorrt oi the firebox near the top of the g12�SS door. This preheated air suppiies thQ neCes-
sary fresh oxygen to mix with the urtbum�:d gases, helping #o create second, tl,ird and fourth stages oi combusUon. This
sir is regulated by the Primary Air Control For mor� primary afr (more heat), push rad in. For less primary air {less heat),
pull rod aUt. See Figure 78A.
