Seconded by Sondheimer. Upon a voice vote, there being no nays, the motion
carried unanimously. �
The Board felt they would like to wait until a survey was available to them
before they made a decision on thie xequest and they would also like to
consider all of the vari.ances together.
MOTION by Drigans to table the request to the October 26, 1971 meeting to
allow the applicant time to have a survey made and also to allow time for
the additional variance notices to be sent out to the surrounding property
owners. .

Mr. Kenneth R. Swanson was present to present the request.
Mr. Swanson stated he wants to build a 72 foot addition onto the south side
-' of the existing 13.63 foot garage and add on 2.3 feet onto the front to make
it flush with the house. The variance is only necessary on the front corner
of the addition as the lot is irregular in shape. This addition will enlaxge
� the garage into a double and it wi11 have a 16 foot door.

Mr. Belisle stated he measured the distance between the existing s�xuctux�s
as 192 feet. With the proposed addition there will still be 12 feet be�ween
structures. �

Mr. Belisle stated he would like to see a 1-3/4 inch solid door insta].led
between the house and the garage and 1 hour fire rated sheet rock will be
provided on the walls.and ceiling.
Mr. Swanson said he woulil install the so].id door and the sheetxock on the
walls and ceiling.

3. The applicant is merely enlarging his garage into a two car garage and
the hardship is the configuration of the lot.

was ahown to the Board. The survey did ahow a garage that Mr. Nielsen said

Mr. Nielsen stated he plans to build a 26 foot by 24 foot garage. There i�

Councilman H�rris said he no�iced the green area in front has been reduced from
what it is now. He felt the existing green s�rip._shouZd be maintained. The
City Engineer said the Gode requires only a 20` strip be�t�een the parking and
the road�aay. He tried �to get them to maintain the existing green area, bu�t they
feel they need i:his area to display their new cars. They did provide some island
areas. Cauncilm�n Harris said Yae fel�t the Council.c3oes have some latitude in
requixing aes�the�ticsm As the plans are now, it �rould be a sea of blacktop..
The Ci�y Prosecutor saicl he t�ould agree, but it has nevex been tes�ed in courte

the Council could require a new owner to maintain some�thing that t�as required of
the previous o�mer. Councilm�n Harris said he has seen some new car facilities
and they did a very nice job of landscaping. What Viking is providing is just
one sinall strip of green. The City Prosecu�tor said he would like to ta].k to the
Ciicy Attorney about making i:hi.s xequirement before �he Council acts. He would have
a report ready at the next Counci:l Mee�ing.

week he received a letter �rom Mr. Robert D. O'Nei1.1, 863. Rice Creek Terrace,
� Presiden�t of �he Fric�ley Svrim Club, and he would lilce this leic�er to be kep� on
fa.le and rea� i� aloud. Iie s�id he did not want �he Council to act in haste,
but perhaps over the winter some conclusions could be reached, naw �hat the

Counc�.lman Harris said there w�.s a suggestian made by one af the candic�ates
rtitnning for affice that'Yie felt should be cansidered. It was sugg'ested �hat a
Capi-tal Improvement Commit�tee could be fo�-mec1, ancl they could clo some planning
on how to pay for developmen'�s such as this. A commi�tee such as �his coul� be a
very real asset to the coznmun.ity. He said he'vaould have no objection ico having
a svaimming pool, but the big question is how to pay for ito This committee
could be charged with makin� soane recommendations along this line azad if that
quesicion was answered, he Eaou�d be favo�able to the addition of such a facility.
