Blocking befin►een the rim Joist and the first floor joist is to be installed at the east and west non-bear�ng walis. The blocking is to be 2 x 12's toe nailed to fhe si(1 and the joist with (4) 10d nails. The blocking is to be spaced at 48" on center. 3. In accordanca with Uniform Building Code Chapter 23 Section 2306.7, the crawl space is io ventilated by an approved mechanical means or by openings into the under-floor area. Such openings are to be installed through the concrete stem wall and rim joist above the grade elevation. A minimum of three openings are required for both the east and west walls (6 totaf). The openings are to be 8" high by 2Q° wide and installed between the f{oor blocking described in item 1 above. Two of the openings per wall are to in�talled as close as is prae#ical to e��h comer of the crawi spa�e. The third opening is to be installed equally spaced between the other two. An access hatch to the crawl space is to be instalied along the south wail near the utility room. The hatch is to be a minimum of 24" wide by 36" high. The opening is to be headered by a doubled rim joist bearing 6" on the sili plate at each end of the opening. The opening is to be pravided with manually installed door closure devices in accordance with Section 703 of the 1998 Minnesota Code adopted Flood Proofing Regulations developed by the Office of the Chief Engineers, U.S. Army, Washington D.C. (1972 edition), 6. The concrete foundation wall in detail S6 may be raised to a height of 8'-0" above the garage floor slab. You authorized our work in the field on January 17, 2002. Our authorized scope of services was limited to the following: 1. Observe the soils exposed within the mass excavation for the planned structure. 2. Put down shallow hand auger borings to explore the local subsurface �oil conditions. 3. 4. Provide judgments regarding suitability of the observed soils for support of the anticipated structural loading. Perform intermittent field compaction testing of engineered fill soils. CONCL!!SlORlS Based on our limited observations and hand auger borings, the soils exposed within the observed excavation were judged to be sand (SP) or sand with silt (SP-SM). The exposed soils were judged capable of supporting the anticipated fill and foundation loads for the planned construction. PROJECT INFORMATION We understand the construction in progress will consist of a single-family residential structure of poured concrete foundation and wood frame type construction. Overall plan dimensions for the structure are approximately 39'6" x 25'. The structure will have a crawl space and garage floor at approximately 819'. The first floor elevation will be at approximately elevation 824'. We understand the structure was designed to exert an allowable soil bearing pressure of 2000 psf and will be supported on perimeter strip foofiings placed at normal frost protection depfih. Chapter 47 � PROJECT NO: 032011 DATE: January 23, 2002 PAGE: 2 After our initial observation and recommendations, the logs of finro soil borings performed by Braun Intertec (Braun #BPDX-95-012A) in February of 1995 were provided to us. The soil boring logs indicated a generalized soil profile of sandy silt or organic silt underlain by coarse alluvium and fine alluvium to the depths explored. Please refer to the referenced soil boring logs for specific details. OBSERVATION METHODS AND RESULTS Our observations of the mass excavation were perFormed on January 17 and 18, 2002, on an intermittent basis. �esides observing the exposed soils, we placed several shallow hand auger borings to explore the localized subsurface conditions to aid our judgments. The soils exposed and retrieved by our hand auger borings were classified in accordance with ASTM:D2488 and estimates were made of their strength properties. At the time of our initial observations, it appeared the mass excavation for the house extended approximately 3' into the existing soils. In our opinion, the soils exposed in the excavation bottom consisted of natural sandy silt or organic silt that we judged to be in a soft condition. The bottom of the excavation was at approximately 813.5'. Our shallow hand auger borings indicated the soft soil extended to approximately elevation 811.5' and was underlain by medium dense sand coarse alluvium. Therefore, we recommended that the mass excavation be extended approximately 1.5' to 2' more to expose the sand coarse alluvium at approximately elevation 811'. On our January 18, 2002, visit we observed that the soft silty soils had been removed, exposing the under�ying sand coarse alluvium. The bottom of the excavation was generally level at approximately elevation 811'. We judged the exposed sand to be in a medium dense condition. Based on elevation and location information provided in the field by the excavating contractor, it appeared that the excavation was provided with the recommended 1:1 lateral oversize for the structure where necessary. This oversizing is required for support of the lateral loads exerted by the footings throughout the fill sequence. After the exposed soils were judged suitable, engineered fill was placed to attain footing grade. Therefore, based on our observations, hand auger borings, and compaction tests, it is our opinion the soils observed are suitable to support the anticipated fill and foundation loads up to 2000 psf. The compaction tests were evaluated according to the Moisture-Density Relation of Soils as designated by ASTM:D698-91 (Standard Proctor). The test results attached indicate the recommended minimum compaction level of 95% of Standard Proctor was attained or exceeded at the test locations and elevations. REMARKS It must be recognized that we do not practice in the field of surveying. Therefore, we must rely on elevation and location information provided by others.
