Those posts which extend into fhe ground and provide support are indicated by an empty square surrounded with a circle indicating the concrete pier below. Railing posts that don't extend to the ground, are shown as squares with an x" inside of them. IMPORTANT NOTE: The front and rear 4x4 support posts for the octagons are located at the exact corners where the rim joists connect to each other. The 4x4 support post that is next to the rectangular lower deck is not located at the rim joist connection. (See The Floor Framing Plan.) The ideal method for pier and post installation is to set the post on a concrete footing (or compacted gravel if permitted by your local code). Dig a ten to twelve inch diameter post hole in undisturbed soil to a depth of two feet below grade (or below the frost line in your area, whichever is greater), and pour a minimum eight inch thick concrete footing at the bottom. (If possible, make the center of the pads slightly higher, so any water will drain away from the base of the post). A post which is longer than needed is then placed in the center of the hole and firmly braced into final plumb position. The last step is to fill around the post with compacted soil or concrete, carefully tamping it every few inches with a tamping rod (the end of a 2x4 is ideal for this situation) to remove any voids or air pockets. The soil or concrete should protrude out of the ground and be sloped away from the post to prevent water accumulation. (See Detail "D°.) Using string and a line level, transfer the height of the bottom of the ledger board (bottom of deck joists) to all posts. Double check all elevation marks by attaching the string to different posts and leveling between posts. These marks are the top of the beam members. When select- ing the beam members, hold each one up and sight along iYs length; lumber is seldom perfectly straight, so you may notice a slight bow, or "crown° in the board. During instal- lation, set the boards so this crown is up. As the board dries and settles, it will tend to straighten.
