After er.amining the soils on this lot we felt tha'c �onstructing a granular pad as originally recommended in our letter of Apri1 26, 1974, was not required and therefore recommended an alternate methad of foundation prepara�ion, campaction of the exist- ing fi11 prior to placing footings on it. The front (north} footings were placed on the fill and subsequent testing in this area indicated densities of 96.1% and 92.4% of modi�Fied proctor. A black sandy loam of 1ow organic content wi�h some areas containing a layer of tree roots was encountered under the a^ear (south) footing. We fe7t �chat the black sandy loam would be sui�able for footings and recommended that this materia1 be compacted and that the tree roots be removed before placing any footings. The contractor was also given�the optlon of constructing the footing in the natural sandy material below; the layer of tree roots and he chose to place the footing on this ma�erial approximately 2 fee� below the required fros�i footing depth. . Those alternate methods may be applicable for future footing con- struction in this subdivision provided cericain criteria are satisfied. Footings may 6e constructed on fill materia1 or natural black sand provided that it is compacted, that any underlying black sand is low in organic content and very granular, and tha�t this material will sufficiently support a floor slab. This method is not recommended where the b1ack soil is not granular or is high in organic content or is thicker than 1.0: The other alternate of placing the footings in �the natural sandy materia1 be1ow the fill is recommended only if the ma�erial lying above the faotings will provide sufficient support for floor slabs. � If you have any ques�ions or if we can be of further assistance please contact us.
