This valve locks in all three operating positions to insure proper oper-
ation. By rotating the handle clockwise and at the same time raising
or lowering the handle, one wili be able to guide it to each of the
three positions.
4.
1. When the valve handle (33A) is in the ful I DOWN position, the fi Iter
is set to operate for filtration of the pool and also in the correct
position to add Diatomaceous Earth.
2. To go from the filter position to the backwash position, turn the
handle clockwise with a slight upward pull. The handle will auto-
matically select its proper guideway and slide upward to a stop
position. You are now in backwash. The purpose of this position is
to allow thg flow and pressure of the pump to assist in the clean-
ing of the filter unit as explained on back page.
s. vacuum to Waste Position — this Exclusive DOUGHBOY Feature
allows one to vacuum an extremely dirty pool directly to waste
without contaminating the filter unit. It is also advantageous in
the event that the pool is to be emptied, in that, one may draw the
water through a vacuum cleaner set or suitable hose directly out to
To place the valve in the vacuum ta waste position, again rotate
the handle clockwise with a slight upward pull. Again Ute handle
will automatically select its proper guideway and raise to a full
stop in the vacuum to waste position.
Upon the completion of an operating cycle such as backwash or
vacuum to waste, the handle may be lowered in a similar manner.
That is, turn clockwise with a slight downward pressure, the han-
dle will again select its guideway and drop ta the lower position.
If the vacuum to waste position has been used, it will obviausly
take one rotation and downward movement to bring the valve to the
backwash position and an additional rotation and downward move-
ment to bring the valve back to the filter position.
The handle will rotate 360° (a full tum) in each of the three posi-
tions. The guideways are located approximately 90° apart (one
quarter tum). It is recommended totake advantage of DOUGHBOY'S
exclusive locking feature when the filter is in the filter position.
This can be accomplished by tuming the hardle away fran the
guideway so that the handle cannot move upward pntil it is man-
ually retumed to the guideway pasition.

3. The hose connected to the Hair & Lint Pot (2) is to be attached to the "Thru-
the-Wall" skimmer by clamping the hose cuff over the skimmer fitting. The
hose connected to the backwash valve return fitting (1) is to be attached to
the return fitting on the pool wall. To prevent any possible leaks between the
fittings and the hose cuff, sealing compound should be used before making
the connections.
4. Fill pool to the proper operating level (refer to skimmer instruction sheet).
PER TING IN TRUCTIONS
Check all fittings to assure air-tight connections. This is neces-
sary to prevent air from being drawn into the filter. Make sure that
the valve handle (5) on the backwash valve (3) is in the fUll dOWli
pOSIti01 (it is shipped from the factory with the handle in this po-
sition).
Start pump by inserting motor cord into any approved, grounded,
110 volt outlet. WARNING: Be sure that the outlet is properly
grounded and not overloaded with other elecUical appliances. If
your motor does not start immediately, check the electrical service.
ELECTRIC CORDS: The filter is supplied with a 25-foot, three-
wire cord, be sure the three pronged plug is properly grounded. If
any additional extension cords are used, the cord mUSt OOt be lang-
er than 25 feet, and it must be 14 gauge wire. For runs greater than
50 feet consult your local electrical contractor for safest methad of
instal lation.
WARNING: The use of inadequate extension cords will void all
warranties given by the motor manufacturer.
IMPORTANT: Unit must be grounded at all times.
The air which is trapped in your filter tank will be automatically
discharged through the discharge hose of the filter. As soon as a
large quantity of air bubbles stop coming into the pool fram the
discharge hose, add filter aid (Diatomaceous Earth) (D.E.) INaVIE-
DIATELY.

with the filter are the required amount for the flSt filter cycle. To add
filter aid, mix dry D.E. with water (in a household bucket) to form a
thin solution. With the filter oerating, slowly pour this thin solution
of mixed D.E. and water directly into the mouth of the surface skimmer.
This will automatically precoat the elements. It is also possible to
carefully sprinkle the dry D.E. powder onto the water surface in the
center of the surface skimmer so that it will tre immediately drawn into
the filter. This should be done carefully. D.E. should not spill into
the pool itself.
NOTE: For a cleaner and more enjoyable swimming pool, one should
have a surface skimmer.
If a surface skimmer is not purchased, ihe following procedure for pre-
coat may be used: With the filter operating, submerge a small bucket
into the pool and raise it to the point that the suction tube is in the
center of this bucket. Position the bucket so that the pool water is
flowing over one edge and being drawn into the filter through the tube.
C CLEANING THE FILTER
Filter should be cleaned when the indicator (on the backwash valve (3))
is in the red zone at the top of the indicator housing (4). OpBBtlllg th@
filter when the indicator is in the red zone will pravide inadequate fil-
tration and therefore, should be avoided.
1. Turn off pump — in order to clean the basket in the Hair & Lint Pot
(2) it is necessary to block off both the suction line (from skimmer)
and return line (to pool wall fitting). This may be accomplished by
removing the basket from the skimmer and placing a rag or cloth
into the suction hole at the bottom of the skimmer tank. Raise valve
handle (5) to the backwash position as explained in valve opera-
tion. (See inside this sheet.) This will slow down or stop the water
from flowing when Hair & Lint Pot lid i5 removed.
powder to th water being drawn into the filter — be careful not to
allow large amounts of D.E. to enter the pool.
When it is necessary to replace the filter aid which has become con-
taminated, an empty one pound coffee can is a good measuring device.
Use the required number of LEVEL one pound coffee cans of filter
aid — see chart below.
NOTE: Filter aid (D.E.) must be inside the filter during all periods of
operation; therefore, clean D.E. must be added after each filter clean-
ing to protect the elements from dirt impregnation. This assures Ionger
filter cycles (the time between cleanings).

THE MINUTES OF THE BOARD OF APPFALS MEETING OF SEPTEP''BER 26, 1972
The meeting was called to ordex by Chairman Minish at 7:35 P.M.
NERS PRESIIVT: Minish, Harju, Sondheimer, Wahlberg
ERS ABSENT: Crowder
OTHElZS PRESENT: Clarence Belisle - Building Inspector
MOTION by Sondheimer to approve the minutes of the September 12, 1972 meeting as
written.
Seconded by Wahlberg. Upon a voice vote, there being no natys, the motion carried
unanimously.
1. A REQUEST FOR A VARIANCE OF SECTION 45.053,2, FRIDLEY CITY CODEq TO REDUC THE
AVERAGE DEPTH OF EXISTING STRUCTURES FROM 95 FEET TO 65 FEET TO ALLOW THE CONSTRUCTION
`:' `' OF A YEAR-ROUND SWIltIING PQOL ON THE SOUTH 5 FEET OF LOT 5, AND ALL OF LOT 6, BLOCK 1,

(REQUEST BY MR. AIAR SAJADY, 6745 EAST RIVER ROAD N.E., FRIDLEY, MINNESOTA.)
Chairman Minish said this item will be held over until the October 10, 1972 meeting
by the request of the applicant.
2. A REQUEST FOR A VARIANCE OF SECTION 56.05, 3A, FRIDLEY SIGN ORDINANCE, TO INCREASE THE
MAXIMUM SIZE WALL SIGN FROM 15% OF THE WALL AREA (234 SQUARE FEET TO 408 SQUARE FEET
TO ALLOW THE ERECTION OF SEVENTEEN 4 FOOT BY 6 FOOT LETTER MODULES TO BE PLACED ON THE

-30. ANOKA COUNTY. (IiEQUEST BY SIGNCRAFTERS INCORPORATED, 13-77TH WAY N.E., FRIDLEY
Mr. Charles Peugh, of Signcraftars, Inc., was present to present he requast.
MOTION by Wahlberg, seconded by Sondheimer, to waive reading the public hearing notice.
Upon a voice vote, there being no nays, the motion carried unanimously.
Sketches of the proposed sign were shown to the Board.
Mr. Peugh explained they are proposing this particular sign as it looks good, the
owner of the building likes it, and it covers up the vents, air conditioners, etc.,
, that are on the roof, fxou the view of the public.
Chaixman Minish asked Mr. Peugh if he was aware of the letter dated September 8, 1972,
written to Viking Chevrolet by Mr. Darrel Clark, stating that nd sign permits would be
issued to them until a colmpletion schedule is received for the outside i.mprovements
stipulated on their original building permit.
Mr. Peugh said he was not aware of th,is letter.
Mrs. Wahlberg asked if he Boa'd should continue with the public hearing or should the
item be held up until the letter is agreed to.
Cirma.n Minish said he felt they could consider the item and if the variance was
approved, a stj,p}jation could be added.that the letter would have to be agreed to
before a permit would be issued■

- Z'he Minutes ot the Boar-d a Appeals Meeting of Sep.amher 26, 197 Pag 2
Mr. Peugh explained the front of the building is 120 feet wide aricl 13 feet high. The
sign will consist of seventeen 4 fcot by 6 foot modules. The modules will spell ouic
"Viking Chevrolet" and have a design module on either end. 'I'here will be a sign
structural background behind the modulesthat is 40 inches high and will run around the
entire front of the building. The modules will extend 1 foot above and 1 foot below the
scructural backing. .'he letters on the modules are only 3 feet by 2 feet. The modules
are made of inetal and acrylic plastic and anly the leters will light up.
Chairman Minish asked if the space in between the modules was added into the area
asked for in the variance. Mr. Belisle said the toal area of just the modules is 4Q8
square feet, 579 square feet for modules plus exposed backrond and 720 square feet if
we follow the Cocie in tlie atrictest sene by using the smallest rectangle which can be
nade to circumscribe the message.
There was a discussion on how the sign area for the variance should have been measurede
It was decided that the space between each module should have been added into the
variance area which would have brought the total area up to 579 square feet.
MOTION by Sondheimer to close th public hearing. Seconded by Wa.hlberg. Upon a voice
vote, there being no nays, the motion carried unanimously.
Mr. Harju stated this ia a difficult variance as the sign is very eye pleasing but
when the total area is ooked at, it is a drastic variance. When you look at the
shopping centers, that are a long way from the road, you can see we have held them
at or near the required 15% of the wall area, and it wouldn't be fair to these
businesses to allow this variance.
Mr. Sordhi.aax ai.d if th.e bak.n was bult up a a parapet, t would not be
casi.de Aat of the i. H a.d t lt the f.11x hould at be consdd

oard miht st a pxcdt i€ they apgrpv the sin.
IIxs. Whlbx said th buildin is lower than what ia nonaally built, so in a way
h. is being penalized by the height of the b uildig. The building will look better
with the s.gn up as it will screen the equipment on the roof.
Chairman Minish asked what the pwner would'think of cutting down the size of the sign.
Mr. Peugh said he had no idea of how the owner would feel about reducing the sign area.
These modules are stock sized and to ma.ke them smaller would require more time and the
owner would like to get the sign up as soon as possible. He said he would prefer to
have the Board take action onthe variance rather than tbling it.
MOION by Sondheimer to recommend to Council approval of the varianee as proposed,
even with the excess of footage involved for the total area of the sign.
Seconded by Wahlberg. Mrs. Wahlberg added the stipulation that Viking Chevrolet would
have to comply with the letter dated September 8, 1972 that was sent to them by Mr.
Da.rrel Clark before the sign permit could be issued.
A VOTE UPON THE MOTION, Sondheimex & Wahlberg voting aye, Harju Minish vo.ting nay,
the motion failed for lack of a majority.
.
Chaixtna,n Miniah told Mr. Peugh the request would go before Council on October 2, 1972.
