Tt was reported that poor bond between the masonry mortar and the masonry units was apparent at the above residence and also that the mortar appeared to have quite low strength. COMPRESSIVE STREN�TH DETERMINATION: - . Six small cubes were removed from random locations of the mortar joints submitted to the laboratory. These cubes were subjected to compressive strength tests. These test cu'bes exhibited compressive strength ranging from 200 psi t.o 270 psi. The average compressive strength of all six cubes was 250 psi. REMARKS• It was reported to the laboratory that the mortar was approximately 22 weeks old when submitted to the laboratory for testing. Based on the c.ompressive strength results obtained, it appears that this mo'rtar is of very low potential strength. As a result of the low compressive strength, the bond to the masonry units would be questionable. Most building codes specify that morrar used for foundations have a minimum compressive strength of approximately 1800 psi. A good foundation mortar batched and proportioned in accordance with AST1�1 C270, Mortar for unit masonry would have a 28 day compressive strength in excess of 2000 psi, It would therefore appear that rhe mortar at the above residence taould not satisfy this criteria. , In order to salvage these foundation walls some modifications will be necessary. It appears that there are three alternatives to produce the satisfactory foundation wall. If these units are iaid in the wall in such a manner as to allow filling of the cores with concrete, the �aall could be salvaged in this manner. The cores of. the masonry units would have to be filled with a 2500 psi grout mixture. A second method of salvage would require the raking back of t.he mortar joint.s at least 1/2 in. and repointing the joints with a satisfactory high strength mortar.
