HAYWARD SELF-PRIMING SUPER PUMP
INSTALLATION Alf`OPERATING INS7RUCTIONS
Your Hayward self-priming centrifugal pump has been quality-built and
ngineered to give you many years of efficient, dependable, corrosion-free
se ice. The advanced design reduces operation and maintenance has been
uced to simple, common-sense procedures.
IMPORTANT SAFETY IIVSTRUCTIONS
When installing and using this electrical equipment, basic safety precautions should always be followed,
including the following: Failure to follow instructions may result in injury.
READ AND FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTIONS
1. WARNING - To reduce risk of injury, do not permit children to use this product unless they are closely supervised at all times.
2. CAUTION - This pump is U.L. listed for permanently installed pools and may also be used with hot tubs and spas 'rf so malced.
It is not U.L. listed for storable pools. A permanently installed pool is constructed in or on the ground and cannot be readily dis-
assembled for storage. A storable pool is constructed so that it may be readily disassembled for storage and reassembled to its
original integrity.
3. If installed within an outer enclosure or beneath the skirt of a hot tub or spa, adequate ventilation and free circulation of air must
be provided to prevnt overheating of the motor.
4. Use motor bonding lug to connect the motor with other bonding parts using a#8 AWG conductor as required by electrical codes.
NOTE: If your pump is aquipped with a 3 it. (1 m) cord and twist lock plug, items 5 through 8 apply.
5. WARNINC= Riskoi Electric Shock. Connect only to a gro.unding-type receptacle protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter
(GFCI). Contact a qualified electrician if you cannot verify that the receptacle is protected by a GFCI.
6. Do not bury cord. Locate cord to minimize abuse from lawn mowers, hedge trimmers, and other equipment.
7. WARNING - To reduce the risk of electric shock, replace damaged cord immediately.
8. WARNING - To reduce the risk of electric shock, do not use extension cord to connect unit to electric supply; provide a
properly located outlet.
SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS
GENERAL TIPS ON PUMP INSTALLATION
Locate the pump as close to pool as practical and run suc-
tion line as direct as possible. This cuts down on friction loss
through pipe and fittings.
Never overtighten pipe connections—use only pipe sealants
formulated specifically for plastics, i.e., teflon tape, Permatex
No. 2, etc.
Suction line should have continuous slope from lowest
point in line. Make sure suction joints are tight. Suction pipe
should be as large or larger than discharge pipe.
Damp, non-ventilated locations should be avoided. Motors
require free circulation of air to aid in cooling.
Insure that the electrical supply available agrees with the
motor's voltage, phase and cycle, and that wire size is ade-
quate for the HP (IMn rating and distance from power
source. Motor must always be properly grounded. If cord
connected, use only a properly grounded outlet. Electrical
circuits must be protected by proper size ground fault circuit
interrupter (GFCI) as required by applicable electrical codes.
All electrical wiring must be performed by qualified person-
nel, and must conform to local codes and regulations.
STARTING AND PRIMING INSTRUCTIONS
FII strainer housing with water to suction pipe level. Never
operate the pump without water. Water acts as a coolant and
lubricant for the mechanical shaft seal.
Open all suction and discharge lines and valves, as well as
air bleed (if available) on filter. (The air that is to be displaced
from the suction line must have some place to go.) Failure
to do so could cause severe personel injury and/or prop-
erty damage.
Turn on power and allow a reasonable time for priming. Fve
minutes is not unreasonable. (Priming time depends on suc-
tion lift and horizontal length of suction piping.) If the pump
will not start, or will not prime, see TROUBLE SHOOTING
GUIDE on back page.

TROUBLE SHOOTING GUIDE
A MOTOR WON'T START
1. Check for improper or loose connections, open
switches or relays, blown circuit breakers or fuses.
2. Manually chk rotation of motor shaft for free
movement and lack of obstruction.
B. MOTOR CUTS OUT-Check for:
1. ring, loose connections, etc.
2. Low voltage at motor (frequently caused by undersized
wiring).
3. Binding and.oveoad. (Amperage reading)
NOTE: Youi Hayward pump motor is equipped with
Automeac Thermal Overload Protecdon. The motor
will automatically shut off, under normal conditions,
before heat damage build-up, due to an improper
operating condition, cen occur. The motor will aufo-
restart when safer heat level is reached.
C. MOTOR HUMS BUT DOES NOT START-
Check tor:
1. Govemor stuck in open position.
2. Open capacitor.
D. PUMP WON'T PRIME
1. Make sure pump/strainer housing is filled with water
and that cover gasket is clean and properly seated.
Tighten hand nuts.
2. Make sure all suction and discharge valves are open
and unobstructed, and that pool water level is above all
suction openings.
3. Block off suction as close to pump as possible and
determine ff pump will develop a vacuum.
a. If pump does not develop a vacuum and pump has
sufficient °priming wate':
1. Tighten all bolts and fittings on suction side.
2. Check voltage to make sure pump is up to
speed.
3. Open pump and check for clogging or
obstruction.
4. ,Remove and replace shaft seal.
b. If pump develops a vacuum, check for blocked suc-
tion line or strainer, or air leak in suction piping.
E. LOW FLOW-Generally, check Tor:
1. Clogged or restricted strainer or suction line; under-
sized pool piping.
2. Plugged or restricted discharge line of filter (high
discharge gauge reading).
3. Air leak in suction (bubbles issuing from retum fittings).
4. Pump operating underspeed (low voltage).
5. Plugged or restricted impeller.
F. NOISY PUMP-Check for:
1. Air leak in suction causing rumbling in pump.
2. Cavitation due to restricted or undersized suction line
and unrestricted discharge lines. Correct suction
Fondition or throttle discharge lines, 'rf practical.
3. bration due to improper mounting, etc.
4. Foreign matter in pump housing.
5. Motor bearings made unsenriceable by wear, rust, or
continual overheating.

Using the information in the re-cep section above, based upon your calcula-
tions, choose the desired pump and/or filter model, then select the proper size
camponent to meet the needs of tlte installation.
It is important tu remember that your Turnover Rate calculation is keyed
directly to a specific Total Dynamic Head calculation fi.e., GPM vs. Fear of
Head). If you increase or decrease your GPM for any rsason, your resistance
wifl increase or decrease respectively.

  TH BASICS OF PUMPJFILTER SIZING
Hydraulics is the study and understanding of the
behavior of liquids at rest and in motion.
We are concerned with water, and the following
characteristics of our application:
1. How much water do we have jPool CapacityJZ
2. How fast do we wart to move the water (Tumover Ratel?
3. How much resistae will this water mest avhile moving
through the system IFriction Lossj?
4. How will we overcome ihis resistance (Pump/Filter Siringl?
Following are step-by-step instructions to answer these
four questions, and, ultimatelr, determine the proper size
pump or filter for virtually any aftermarket installation.
Below each step is a calculatian based on the following
example:l6 fi. b 32 ft. rectangular pool. 3 ft, to $ tt. deep.
ExiSting 1 H.P. pump; filter geuge reads 10 P.S,I. (cleen),
9. Pool Capacity
To deteRnine total gallons, we must first calculate the surface area of the pool
in square feet:
A. Surtace Area
A B R
Area =(A+8)x L x.48 Area = R x R x 3.1 d
ft.
Isurfar arca
Surlac Qrea:161f. x 3Z /t. = 5121t'
L
w
Area=LxW
Next, multiply the sqir footage by averaga dapih ta determine the
approximate cube of the pool
B. Average Depth
( ft. + ft. ► = 2 = ft.
INUrsheltow erd) (dePth•deap and) tararage depth)
Average Depth: (3It t 8 ft.) -2 =5 ft
C. Cube
ft z x tt. = ft3
(sudacearea) (eveiagedeWhl isuhel
Cube: 5f2 ft' x 5.51i =816IL'
Then, multiply the pool's approximate cube by 7.5, which represents the
number of gallons of water in one cubic foot
D. Ppol aastty
ft'x7.5gallons/ft3= gallons
il i a+vl
Poal Capacity: $B96 ft' X 7.5= 21, f gallons
  HAYWAR

Some of the more common pool sizes ere:
°dva.rage Dapd: 4 Fcot
In- round ze Gallons*
12' X 24' Rectangle 11,880
16' X 32' Rectangle 21,120
18' X 36' Aectangle 26,730
20' X 40' Rectangle 33,000
'Avarege Depth: 5 M FeQt
Use these as a general guide lu delermine the pump and filte saes necessary
ta properly tum the pool water over in an 8-12 hour period.
2. Turnover Rate
Once the pnal's capacity has been calculated, the next step is to determine
how fast the water must be circulated in Gallons Pe Minute (GPM), to
meet reasonably clean, sefe water stendards. The recommended minimum
standards for swimming pools are not less than the flow rate to provide
one (1) full wmover of the pool eaery twelve i121 Iours. However, an eight (8) -'"1
to ten i10) hour rate is quite common:
A Turnover Rete in Galluns Per Hour (GPN)
I l gallons = hours = 2 GPH
(paal cepacttyi desired tmiowr time) hupwver rate -
gallona per hour)
Tnmover rate: 2i,1Z0 ga►fons f0 hovra = Z 112 galloas per hour
B. Turnover Nate in Gelloas Per Minute (GPM)
ZQ(° Z- gallons/hour = 60 minutes = GPM
(hl In4NB tJtB - (Nmoa ratd -
gallais per hou) gaUuns P minule)
Tumoverrate: Z112gaNnnsperbour=6D=35GPM
3. Friction Loss
Everything that the water must pass through within the recirculating system —
plumbing and equipment — creates resistane, or Head Loss. The sum of all
the resistance is called Total Dynamic Head, and is measured in Fset of Head.
Often, we are unable to determine the total amount of pipe and fittings in an
eusting installation...it's uergmund. Tharefora, what follows is a simplifiad
"rule-of-thumb° means of determinim Total Dynamic Head.
We will need to add the resistance from the vacuum IsuctionJ side of the pump,
see A on rext page, (measured in inches of inercurp with a vasuum gauge; one
(1) inch of inercury =1.13 feat af waterl; to the resistance on the pressure side
of te pump, see B on nexi page, (measured in pounds per square inch — as
read from the pressure gauge on the Flter when clean; one (1 } p,S.l. = 2.31 feet
of head), to determine Total Oynamic Head, see C next page.
Typicelly, a vacuum reading will not be available; therefore, ihe table below
pravides Common Hcaad luss Faccors for today's high-efficiercy pumps.
