Hi Nick,
The following are the issues/comments needed, as we discussed:
- Mention of securing the 6x6 columns directly to the concrete slab using
bolt down post bases. While not conforming to code the suitability of the
slab for this purpose is judged based on its past performance (over 20
years old), thickness and quality (approx. 10" and no apparent
defects/cracks), and good drainage and soil characteristics. We will be
using 5 columns to support the main beam.
Your existing s.l.ab_.is_structurallr ad_e_ uate to accept the proposed loading of
the columns. I will say that if you do this then you are accepting the
responsibility that there may be differential movement due to the presence
of different foundation systems and a lack of frost protection on the siab.
- Extend the stair bump out to at least 60 inches from the ledger board.
This would allow for the use of a 6x6 column with a concrete footing, the
edge of which would just clear the sidewalk. I measured and actually 62"
would be ideal, leaving a 2" gap between the footing edge and sidewalk.
This is acceptable.
- While I will probably use the Simpson A35 angles (I have not ordered
them yet), if there is a problem with obtaining these I would like the option

of using an equivalent product. Any USP equivalent is acceptabfe.
- The option to substitute Simpson LUS28 face mount hangers, or
equivalent, for LUS26 face mount hangars. Anything above and beyond the
LUS26 is acceptab{e.
Thanks for your insights on the stair thread issues. I was able to get the
ESR for the decking material I'll be using and found it to be rated at 300
Ibf., with a maximum center to center spacing of 12". This will satisfy the
code requirements and the product should hod up much better than wood
over time.

PS- We have not started on this project yet as Menard's delivered the
materials late (>2 weels) at which my neighbor who's helping me on this
left for vacation in Germany. He'll be back in a week and we'll get started.
