S`7o?-/c�az ( please be advised that since July 21, 1988, I have received calls fro¢n six h�owr�ers who aan Y�ames in the vacinity of the 5300 block of Horizon Drive, requesting that I inspect their house foundations because of apparent differencial settlenents. Prior to these calls we had inspected 5 other fourr]ations durirx,� 1987 ar�d 1976 that were in this ger�eral are�. There appears to be a pattern of things that probablY have caused these settlanents to occur or are present at each location: 1. They have all occured durincJ lo�J �Y �ls (1976, 1987 & 1988) . 2. All have had mature trees growing in the general vacinity of the failure. 3. Yard arr3 street settlanent has also occured in fn�nt of those lxmes that had mature trees in the frnnt yan3 near the failure. 4. All those that have had soil tests done have had a layer receptive or active soil at ar below the footing elevation. 5. All haY►eowr�ers have been advised. to contact a soils engineer report their f ir�di..rigs arrl � to suggest the meth�d. °f �°r�tion. 6. p,l l of the Y�aa�s were buil t in the mid 195 0' s. of moisture to test arr3 The cost of repair will deperri. upon the exter�t of the failures. We estimate the cost of such repair to range between a min,im�► of $500. �0 to a maximum of $20,000.00 or possibly higher. One home repaired in June, 1987 paid an estimated $3,000.00 to a�ntractor to replace the Y�ack wall l32 feet) of their basenent. That repair oonsisted of the follaving: temporarily supporting the structure on post ar�d timbers: ranovirig the back foundation wall and footings diqginq dor,vn through agproximately six feet of clay or silt to granular gravel at three locations (each hole was about 4'x 2')s pouring each hole full of concrete; pourir�g a reir�orced cor�crete grade beam wer the top of the new pads to fonn a�w footing; laying up a r�ew block wall; and setting the house back ctiown. . A camposit map is being maintained that shows the reported dates a� addresses of all reported Problens- ?f anyone war�ts more infonnation on this subject, please contact our department and we will be Y�aP� to revi�a oa�' files. We do have irrlividual records on �ch reported problen. Its possible that there could be more failures that have mt been called in for our review.
