PR 04/08/1968MINUTES OF THE SPECIAL MEETING OF THE PARKS AND RECREATION COI�Il�IISSION, APRIL 8, 1968 �eeting was called to order by Chairman Hughes at• 8:10 P.M. � MEMBERS PRESENT: Hughes, Dunphy, Cochran, Fitzpatrick MEMBERS ABSENT: Larson OTHERS PRESENT: Ed Braddock, Park Consultant Robert Brunk, 5268 Capitol N.E., Summit Square Area Ralph Officer, 315 Hugo N.E., Ruth Circle Area � Paul Brown, Director of Parks and Recreation PARK DEVELOPMENT - BOND ISSUE PROGRESS REPORT: 1. Speaking Engagements: Commission outlined a full calendar of speaking engagements with such organizations as the Fridley Jaycees, Fridley Chamber of Commerce, Fridley Rotary Club and the Fridley Lions Club on tap so far. 2. Guest• Jack Dunphy introduced two guests invited to attend the meeting: One coming from the Summit Square Area, Mr. Robert Brunk, and from the Ruth Circle Area, Mr. Ralph Officer. Both men entertained an interest in helping the Commission with the promotion of the Bond Issue. All Commission members will be asked and expected to give talks pertain- ing to the promotion and successful sale of the Bond Issue. nCommission discussed possible questions and particular interests the groups and citizens of Fridley will want to know of and about. One question to consider an answer to was: What will be our maintenance costs on these newly acquired and developed areas? 3. Citizens Committee: There will be a need for a Fund Raising Drive in order to�support printed material and professional advertisement for the success of the Bond Issue. This must come from outside the Commission or from a Citizens Support the Bond Committee. Coffee Hours - It was pointed out how important the Women of the City will be t,o the cause in spreading the word. Newspapers - The local newspapers must be kept up to date on the informa- tion and details pertaining to the drive. 4. Luncheon Meeting: Director Brown gave the Commission a full report on meeting with Mr. Renaldo Lar.es of Roseville along with Mr. Ed Braddock. Subject - Bond Issue: What to do and what not to do. ^ �5. Next Meeting Set: The Parks and Recreation Commission decided to meet again next week on Tuesday, April 16, 1968, 8:00 P.M. at Civic Center. . MINUTES OF SPECIAL MEET'ING, APRIL 8, 1968 PAGE 2 6. Briefing Session: ^ Commission discussed further, the forming of a group of citizens to brief them on the program and create a Citizens�Committee from this. All members were required to invite and contact as many pro-issue supporters as possible. 7. Brochure: Mr. Ed Braddock presented, displayed and discussed the formulation of a draft copy of the brochure. Commission reviewed what was pre- sented and formulated a final draft to present to the City Council for approval. Copies plus letter will be forwarded to the Council. 8. State and Federal Aid: Mr. Braddock contacted Mr. Elmer Binford of the Federal Grants and Aid plus Mr. Wally Anderson of the State Programs. Both have many applications on hand at this time. Funds can be applied for and may be available. Commission expressed concern over this prospect and encouraged all efforts to make these funds available to the program. HACKMANN PARK BALL FIELD: Copy of letter from City Manager to Councilman Sheridan, Subject: Hackmann Park Ball Field was presented to Commission for discussion and action as re- quested by Council. � MOTION by Fitzpatrick, seconded by Dunphy,to concur with City Council and have sign posted�on backstop at Hackmann Park stating Softball Playing Only - 12 years and under. The Motion Carried. . ADJOURNMENT: The meeting was adjourned at 10:45 P.M.
