FRIDLEY, MINNESOTA 55432 • PHONE (612) 571-3450 May 8, 1989 Walter and Patricia Lipa 7527 Lyric Lane N.E. Fridley, MN 55432 RE: First Notice of Noncompliance at 7527 Lyric Lane N.E. Dear Mr. and Mrs. Lipa: The City of Fridley has established a City Code for the purpose of promoting a pleasant and attractive suburban environment. A recent inspection of the property at 7527 Lyric Lane N.E. revealed that not all Code requirements are presently being met. Listed below is an item which does not comply with the City Code: 1. Observed vehicle (license CSC -352) parked on lawn beside driveway. Fridley Zoning Code requires that all vehicles must be parked on a hard surface parking area or in a garage, as parking on lawns such that the vehicle is visible from any public right-of-way is prohibited. Your prompt attention in correcting this situation would greatly assist us in helping make Fridley a better place to live. An inspection will be conducted on or about May 22, 1989, to determine compliance. If you have questions or would like to discuss this, please contact me at 572-3595. Thank you for your cooperation! Inspect the surface and plan how you will proceed. 2. Sweep the surface with a stiff, bristle broom and/or blow off loose granules/debris with a hand held blower. 3. Remove any gooey or dried -out roof patching materials. 4. Using a solution of 20 percent bleach and 80 percent water, wet- down any area where fungus or mildew growth is present. NOTE: Allow the solution to stand fora minimum of 30 nd.nuLes. Then flush the surface with clean water. 5. Using non -.rusting staples or nails, staple or nail down lifting shingles so they are flush to the surface. 6. Replace any missing, brittle, or curled shingles that cannot. be stapled or nailed flush to the surface. 7. Apply the patching product and polyester fabric as needed. a. Seal. any area causing a leak. 9. Use the patching product- and polyester fabric on all holes, cracks, valleys, drip edges, flashings, roof- terminations, chimneys, skylights, vents, p_i.pes, antennas, all other protrusions, and all peneL-raLions (nail heads, drains, etc.) 10. Apply the patching product and polyester fabric where two different- roofing materials or surfaces join. Page 1 APPLYING ROOF -AMERICA PLUS PRODUCTS (continued) 11. Dilute the colored roofing products with two gallons of clean water per three -gallon unit for a yield of five gallons. 110TE: Roof America Plus, Inc., requires using two coats of diluted Shingle product in all applications. 7.2. nppl.y roofing product- using a paint roller with a 1-1/4 inch nap cover. 13. Apply Lhe second coat after the first coat has cured.. TIPS FOR MAINTAINING UNIFORM COLOR DURING APPLICATION When applying a light col.or, such as Shadow White or Lone Rock, hiding is more difficult than when applying darker colors. These guidelines will help you achieve better hiding and a more aesthetically pleasing appearance with any color. If the final job has unsatisfactory hiding (or lap marks), apply another diluted coat to the entire surface. ADDITIONAL APPLICATION TIPS Following are t1ps that will. be helpful to know when applying product: -Always do a complete side. Do not coat a partial side of a roof and leave the balance for installation later. This will produce undesirable lap marks. -Any roof surface requires periodic maintenance. To clean the surface or remove fungus or mildew, use a solution of 20 percent bleach and 80 percent water. Flush the surface with clean water. -Prior to application, cut back or remove and replace curl.ed shingles with any color new shingles. Page 2 APPLYING ROOF AMC -RICA. PLUS PRODUCTS (continued) -Proper and adequate ventilation is required. The presence of curled shingles, fungus, and mildew growth is a good indication that additional ventilation is required. NOTE: hoof America Plus' Shingle product is designed for use over old, tared, but basically sound roofing surfaces--nol: brittle, dried -out roof. If shingles are brittle to the touch or break easily when walked upon, a total shingle roof replacement may be necessary. SURFACE PREPARATION -Before starting, inspect• the surface and plan how you will. proceed with the project. A little time spent planning what you will do could save you several. hours on installation. -Sweep the ent.Are roof- surface with a stiff broom to remove a.1.1. leaves, pine needles, loose granules, and any other foreign matter. -If: fungus growth of any kind is present, mix a solution of bleach and water (20 percent bleach and 80 percent- water). Spray and thoroughly wet down all areas (using a Hudson -type sprayer) where any kind of fungus or mildew growth is present. Allow to stand for. 20 to 30 minutes, the flush these areas thoroughly with tap water using a garden hose. NO'T'E: A Hudson -type sprayer is used to spray liquid plant food and similar low -viscosity materials. -If soft, gooey, or loose plastic or asphalt -based materials that may have been used to repair areas in the past are present, remove as much as possible using a putty knife or scraper. Page 3 APPLYING ROOF .AMERICA PLUS PRODUCTS (continued) -All shingles must lay flat, flush and be secured to the surface before sealing with Roof America Plus products. Use either staples or roofing nails to secure loose shingles. Use only non -rusting staples or nails. NOTE',: When shingles are bridged to adjoining surfaces, a fully cured application of our patching product will thoroughly seal the shingles. Do not attempt to glue down shingles with any Roof America Plus product since it is water-based and, if trapped between two shingles, will not dry. -first- seal. arid flash all critical areas of the roof surface with a combination of our patching product and polyester bridging/reinforcing fabric. This is very important since 90 percent of all leaks occur in the following areas: around skylights; pipes, vents or other protrusions; chimneys; valleys; drains or other penetrations; drip edges; antennas; cracks, splits, holes, seams; where two surfaces connect or join (i.e., terminations); any arid all other roof protrusions, terminations, penetrations, arid roof surface defects. -Always use a combination of Roof America Plus synthetic rubber patching material and polyester bridying/reinforcing fabric. Brush a complete layer application of the patching product over the surface, bridging the two surfaces together. While the patching product- is wet, embed the polyester bridging/reinforcing fabric into the wet material.. Allow to dry, then brush over the fabric with a second application of patching product. -Make sure the fabric lays flat, without wrinkles or "fish mouths" (meaning the edges of the fabric must be flush to the surface and be completely sealed --overlapping and completely sealing the edges of the polyester fabric to the surface). Allow to dry before applying additional. Roof America Product materials. Page 4 APPLYING ROOF AMERICA. PLUS PRODUCTS (continued) APPLYING SHINGLE PRODUCT OVER THE ENTIRE SURFACE Roof surfaces can become extremely hot. Even if air temperature is low, the roof temperature can get as high as 170 degrees F which, if not addressed, will cause the product to dry too quickly, resulting in undesirable lap marks. Homeowners are seeking an aesthetically attractive appearance, as well as waterproofing protection. Therefore, before applying Shingle product-, flush down the roof surface with cool tap water. (using a standard garden hose without a spray nozzle) . to ].ower the roof surface temperature. This will not only.' assist in getting a more aesthetically pleasing application, but it will also make the application of our Shingle product easier and faster. SPRAY EQUIPMENT -GUIDELINES Airless or convenLional spraying equipment is an excellent application technique for. applying Roof America Plus products. Maximum dilution is 2 gallons of water per 3 gallons of product. What type of spray equipment- should be used? In general, you can use any spray equipment that is recommended by equipment manufacturers to spray heavy -bodied latex -type materials. To obtain the best results, choose the diameter of the hose and gun consistent with maintaining maximum pressure at the tip. Larger diameter. Hoses produce less pressure loss as the product is pumped through it. Recommended Bose diameter is 3/8 inch to 1./2 :inch. The least• restriction in the gun will also assist In maintaining the required pressure. Also, it is generally preferable to position the nozzle perpendicular to the roof surface. A pole extension of a few feet will make this easier.. What air pressure is recommended? A constant minimum pressure of GO PSI is recommended for conventional spraying equipment. Because of the high solids of Roof America Plus products, when using airless spray equipment, a minimum of 2,500 PSI measured under static conditions at pump outlet is required to properly atomize without dilution. Page 5 APPLYING ROOF AMERICA PLUS PRODUCTS (continued) What spray Lip size is recommended? For Roof America Plus Shingle product, we recommend a tip size .from .020 to .028. Page 6
