This letter presents the results of our recent inspection of the soil conditions at the above referenced project® Our work was authorized by your firm on June 2, 1975° Our investigation con- sisted of an on-site evaluation of the soils at the south garage footing linea Our work was initiated because concern was expres- sed on your part with regards to the density of the backfill of an adjacent sewer trench. Our inspection consisted of a visual examination of the soils within this footing line° In addition, hand auger borings were put down and penetrometer soundings were taken to determine the consistency of the surficial soils° The hand penetrometer relates the unconfined compressive strength of the cohesive soils from the resistance required to penetrate the soil stratum with a special tipped steel probe. We understand that a deep sewer line passes relatively close to the proposed construction. This sewer line excavation, which has been invert elevation 25` to 35° below grade, was maintained with a 1:1 lateral oversize in each of the perpendicular directions from the longitudinal axis of the sewer. Therefore, a portion of the backfill trench falls within the proposed garage area. Based on a graphical interpretation, we would estimate the depth of backfill below bottom footing elevation to be in the range of 6' to 10 Subsequent to the placement of the sewer line, we understand the trench was filled, but indications are the trench may have been filled in an uncontrolled manner. Furthermore, compaction tests were not taken to assure that adequate density was attained° Our records indicate the density tests taken by our firm were confined to the road areas. This was approximately 2' to 4' below surrounding grade. Our hand auger borings and penetrometer soundings revealed the soils in the south garage footing line to be brown sandy clay of stiff consistency. It should be noted that our borings were confined to the surficial soils (upper 3.5' to 41) and give no indication of the consistency of the soil at depth. As the upper materials appear to be quite stiff, placement of the garage footings on the existing soil system might be considered a reasonable risk if the precautionary procedures are followed. These precautionary procedures would be undertaken to minimize the effect of any differential_ settlement which_,might.occur. These -procedures would include widening the footings, the addition of steel reinforcing bars at two elevations within the footing and surface densification of the footing lines prior to concrete placement. A structural en- gineer should be contacted for exact details regarding extra rein- forcement of the footings. To eliminate the chances of any differ- ential settlement, all of the old trench backfill would have to be removed down to competent natural soils, with .an appropriate lateral oversize, and the area upgraded with a controlled compacted fill. As deep penetration borings were not placed within the garage area, we cannot warrant the soil conditions beneath the depth of our shallow hand auger borings° However, assuming that the density of the entire trench backfill is similar to the materials encountered in our investigation, placement of the garage footings at the existing elevations would be -a reasonable risk.
