12-14-93 4:15 p.m.
A call was received by Gerry long, the weekend duty person, at 4:15 p.m. on
December 14, 1993. He immediately went to the location and inspected the
sanitary sewer manholes on Mississippi Street. The upstream manhole, east of
the hoarse, was found to be blocked. Gerry then called Greg Kottsick, from the
Sewer Department, to assist him with the backup. The Sewer Department jetting
machirp was used to relieve the blockage at 5:00 ;.m.
Greg Kottsick called me at my home at 5:30 p.m. and informed me of the problem.
I went to the home and inspected the basement. I found that almost the entire
basement floor was wet and a large portion of the basement was carpeted. The
homeowner explained to me that when she came home and found that the basement
was wet, she called a plumber because she thought that the problem was in her
house sewer service. She said that the plumber inspected the basement and told
her that he could tell that the problem must be in the main sewer line. She said
she then called the City. She also told me that she had already called her
insurance company and Servicemaster Co. She said that Servicemaster told her
that they would not be able to clean the basement until 8:30 a.m. the next day.
She said she was concerned about waiting because it could cause more damage to
her carpet and furniture. I explained to her that I could get another cleaning
company to do the cleanup if that was satisfactory to her. Exceptional Cleaning
Co. was called and they started the cleanup at about 9:00 p.m.
While I was inspecting the basement, I found that the basement has a drain tile
system that is connected to the house sewer line. I explained to the homeowner
that the drain tile being connected to the sanitary sewer was not a good system
to have, because it not only increases the amount of water going to the sewer
system, but when there is a blockage in the main sewer line the sewer will back
up all around the basement and come in much faster.
