I am writing in response to your letter dated September 19, 1989.
Thank you for expressing your concerns regarding the Fridley sign
ordinance.
I realize that the issue of signage is very important to churches
as well as many of the businesses in the City. It is the City's
opinion that allowing only two temporary signs per year does not
present a hardship to the churches in the area, as single tenant
commercial and industrial buildings are held to the same
limitations. I am sure that SuperAmerica or any of the other
single tenant commercial businesses would love to display temporary
signs advertising their specials on a weekly basis.
There are alternative ways to solve the issue of temporary signage.
Permanent signs can be altered to accommodate changeable
readerboards. I have spoken with several churches in the area
about this, and many of them are considering this alternative.
These readerboards present an opportunity for churches to display
messages about activities other than just the weekly services. The
City sign code does not regulate or require a permit for the
messages that occur on these signs.
Please be informed that the City sign ordinance is in the process
of being amended. There are several housekeeping items that need
to be cleaned up to make administering the sign ordinance easier.
Sometime between the fall of 1989 and the spring of 1990, these
sign ordinance amendments will come before both the Fridley
Planning Commission and Fridley City Council at public hearings.

These public hearings allow for input from the public, and you are
welcome to address the Planning Commission and the City Council
concerning the issues you have raised in your letter. Please check
the public hearing notices in the Fridley Focus and the Minneapolis
