SUBJECT: Floor Joist Condition
Ulteig Project No. 11.00604
Ulteig previously provided a review of the roof truss bearing conditions prior to a remodel at the above
residence. Refer to the memorandum dated March 8, 2011 for more information. During demolition,
existing and proposed joist penetrations were observed on two main level floor joists. Ulteig has been
retained to provide a structural engineering review of these two joist members. A site visit was not
performed. The following information was reported by the builder for use in our review:
a. The floor joists are 2 x 8 members at 16" on center.
b. One of the floor joists in question spans approximately 11'-4" with two 31/2" diameter holes cut
through the center of the joist depth approximately one feet and three feet respectively from the
interior bearing location. Install a 1.3E 2 x 8 LSL joist on both sides of the existing joist. Nail the
new joists to the existing with 0.131" x 3" nails at 12" o.c. in two rows and fasten together with
PL400 adhesive. Cut equivalent 31/z diameter holes through the new joists. Extend the new joists a
minimum of three feet beyond the holes in both directions, or to the bearing wall location.
c. The second floor joist in question is in line with the first joist, located closer to the front of the
residence. The joist has a large notch in the top of the member, within five feet of the interior
bearing wall. The notch previously allowed an HVAC duct to extend over the top but the duct was
removed and the notch left open. Install a 2 x 8 (1.3E LSL or SPF #2 grade) without a notch on
either side of the existing joist. Nail the new joist to the existing with 0.131" x 3" nails at 12" o.c. in
two rows and fasten together with PL400 adhesive. Extend the new joist a minimum of three feet
beyond the notch in both directions, or to the bearing wall location.
The modified joist members will be structurally adequate to support all Code required loading once
the above strengthening is performed, as noted in this memorandum.
All construction is to be in accordance with standard industry practice and the requirements of the
