FURNISHED 2828 Fifth Avenue South COPIES TO: Fridley Building Inspection Minneapolis, MN 55405 BY: Attn: Mr. Belisle LABORATORY No. 9-4180 INTRODUCTION This report presents the results of a recent soils inspection our firm performed in the vicinity of Units 33 and 34 of the Timber Ridge Townhouse development. No preliminary soil investigation was performed at the site. However, general geologic information in dicates the soils in this area are fine-grained sand with occasional interbedded layers of silty soils. The development site is located in a relatively level area bordering Rice. Creek. Townhouse units #33 and #34 will be located very near the slope leading down to Rice Creek. Because of the proximity of the units to the embankment, we were requested to examine the area to evaluate the slope stability. INVESTIGATION On October 248 1972, we performed a visual inspection of the site conditions in the vicinity of units 33 and 34. At the time of our inspection, the basement excavations for the two-story structures had been completed. The excavation for the approximately 20' by 30' structures extended to approximately 8' below the original grade in unit 33 and 7' below the original grade in unit 34. Hand auger borings in the bottom of the excavation indicated the under- lying soils consisted of at least 4' of fine-grained, brown and light brown sand. Measurements of the slope to Rice Creek indicate a vertical drop of approximately 45'. The slope angle varies from approximately 37 degrees in the upper two-thirds portion of the slope to 26 degrees in the lower one-third. Shallow hand auger borings along the slope indicate approximately 1.5' of brown, silty sand topsoil underlain by at least 3' of light brown fine-grained sand.- Existing vegetation indicates'the slope should be in its natural state CONCLUSIONS Based on the results of our inspection and general geologi:dal information in.` the- area, it is our opinion relatively light townhousestructures will not endanger the stability of the natural slope extending down to Rice Creek. While the soil pressure immediately below the footings will be greater than the soil has previously experienced, the overall effect of the excavation -construction operation should actually reduce the stresses on the soils found at greater depths.
