T - s - s Ji dam' ).F 3" �'(-S.• BALLASTED PART 1 -GENERAL 1.01 WORK INCLUDED The Firestone Contractor (Firestone License Number will furnish and install the Firestone Ballasted RubberGard Roofing System in accordance with Firestone's current published Specifications and Details on the project. 1.02 RELATED SECTIONS The Firestone Contractor will work with contractors completing work in related sections and complete work in related sections included in the scope of his contract. 1.03 SUBMITTALS With this submittal,the Firestone Contractor is submitting the attached Technical Information Sheets and samples as requested by the specifications. 1.04 QUALIFICATIONS A. Firestone is a single source manufacturer of EPOM roofing systems(including the Ballasted System)with over 10 years of experience. B. This Firestone contractor has years of roofing experience. 1.05 DELIVERY,STORAGE,AND HANDLING Products will be delivered in original unopened containers as labeled by the manufacturer and stored and protected in accordance with the manufacturer's requirements prior to and during installation.Materials which have been damaged to the point that they will not perform as specified will not be used. 1.06 CODE REQUIREMENTS This system make up is an Underwriters Laboratory(UL) "P"assembly and meets UL Class design requirements. 1.07 JOB SITE CONSIDERATIONS(CAUTIONS AND WARNINGS) A. The contractor will keep all adhesives,sealants,primers and cleaning materials away from ALL ignition sources(i.e.,flames, sparks,etc.). B. All bonding,splicing,and sealing surfaces must be kept free of dirt,moisture,and any other contaminants. C. The Firestone contractor will contact Firestone Technical Services for approval of fasteners to be used with other substrates prior to installation. D. Insulation attachment is not required for Ballasted or PMR Systems.If insulation attachment is specified,acceptable plastic insulation plates which lock and recess the fastener heads shall be used.Contact Firestone Technical Services for a list of acceptable insulation plates and additional special precautions and requirements in the event that insulation attachment is considered.Expanded Polystyrene Insulation shall not be pre-attached. E. The Firestone contractor will contact Firestone Technical Services for approval of any non-Firestone fastener and plate for attachment of Firestone accepted insulation prior to job start-up. F. The Firestone contractor will determine the puN-out resistance for all substrates(wall or deck)which will receive mechanical attachment of the roofing system(i.e.:base tie-in securement)to assure that the substrate will provide a minimum pull-out capacity of 200 pounds per fastener. G. If tested pull-out values do not meet the minimum Firestone requirements,additional attachment requirements will be necessary. H.The Firestone fastener will be used for membrane installation and termination. I. The fastener and plate will be used for insulation installation and attachment. 2.04 OTHER FIRESTONE ACCESSORIES The Ballasted System will consist of all Firestone supplied or approved materials.Attached please find the Technical Information Sheets that contain the product data requested for this project,for Firestone supplied materials. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.01 ROOF SUBSTRATE PREPARATION A. All substrates to which the Ballasted System is installed will be properly prepared prior to membrane installation.The surface will be clean,dry,smooth,free of sharp edges,fins,loose or foreign materials,oil,grease and other materials which may damage the membrane.All roughened surfaces which could cause damage to the membrane will be properly cushioned with insulation.All surface voids of the immediate substrate greater than'/:wide will be properly filled with an acceptable insulation and subsequently mechanically attached.Ponded water,snow,frost and/or ice,present in more than trace amounts,will be removed from the work surface prior to installation of the Ballasted System. B. The Ballasted and PMR Systems maybe installed directly overanesisdng smooth surfaced built-up root which has net been re-saturated or coated. 4. CAUTION:Flaw of existing coal tar into the building may occur when new fasteners penetrate an existing coal tar pitch membrane. S. Q005/006 4.0 C. A vapor retarder will be installed in accordance with the project specifications. D. For re-roofing applications only:all existing roof system components will be removed in accordance with the specifications. If unspecified detrimental components are discovered during installation,they will be brought to the attention of the project designer for corrective action under provisions for unanticipated additional work. 3.02 WOOD NAILER LOCATION AND INSTALLATION Wood nailers will be installed in accordance with the specifications.Wood nailers in a recover situation will be pressure treated(i.e. "Wolmanized"or Osmose K-33). 3.03 INSULATION INSTALLATION Only as much insulation as can be covered with roofing membrane and completed before the end of the day's work,or before the onset of inclement weather,will be installed.Insulation will be neatly fitted to all penetrations,projections,and nailers.Insulation will be loosely fitted,with gaps not greater than'/;.All gaps greater than 1/4'will be filled with insulation of the same type.Under no circumstances will the membrane be left unsupported over a space greater than'/<".Tapered or feathered insulation will be installed around roof drains so as to provide proper slope for drainage.When installing multiple layers of insulation,all joints between layers will be staggered. 3.04 FIELD MEMBRANE The RubberGard System wilt be installed so that field and flashing seams shed water(shingle type fashion).The membrane panels will be placed(loose laid),without stretching,over the acceptable substrate and allowed to relax for a minimum of 30 minutes before bonding.As ambient air temperatures decrease,the relax time for the membrane will increase.Subsequent membrane sheets will be installed in the same manner,overlapping the adjoining sheets a minimum of 3'. 3.05 BALLAST The ballast shall be spread over the completed RubberGard System at the rate specified by the project designer,but never less than 10 lbs./sq.ft.using ASTM#4 stone.Ballast materials will be spread the same working day.Ballast may be spread over the membrane using soft rubber-tired ballast buggies.Ballast will be spread around penetrations by hand.At areas where ballast is loaded,the membrane and underlying insulation will be protected using insulation or plywood over an additional layer of EPOM.Any ballast displaced by a walkway shalt be distributed around the pad,to maintain the specified average ballast rate. 3.06 PROTECTION MAT When specified,the Firestone RubberGard Protection Mat will be unrolled over the membrane overlapping a minimum of 6 inches (Wetting the mat or roof membrane wilt facilitate the handling.)An additional layer of Firestone RubberGard Protection Mat will be overlaid around all projections,pipes,vents,drains,etc.,ensuring 12"minimum overlap.Firestone RubberGard Protection Mat shall extend up all vertical interruptions,slightly higher than the ballast stone.Firestone RubberGard Protection Mat shall extend around all paving blocks a minimum of 2"in all directions. 3,07 MEMBRANE LAP SPLICING The 3°end and side laps will be spliced using Firestone QuickSeam Splice Tape or Firestone Splice Adhesive in accordance with current Firestone procedures. 3.08 MEMBRANE SECUREMENT(BASE TIE-IN)LOCATION AND INSTALLATION The membrane(base tie-in)will be secured at all locations where the membrane ends or goes through an angle change greater than 2'in 12"(i.e.roof edges,curbs,interior walls,etc.).It is not necessary to secure the membrane at round penetrations less than 18'in diameter or square penetrations that are less than 4"square. 3.09 FLASHING—PENETRATIONS,WALLS PARAPETS MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT CURBS, SKYLIGHTS,GRAVEL STOPS OR ROOF EDGE METALS, ETC. All Penetrations,Walls,Parapets,Mechanical Equipment Curbs,Skylights,Gravel Stops or Roof Edge Metals will be flashed in accordance with current guidelines in the Firestone Technical Specification Manual. 3.10 ROOF WALKWIOfS thespecifications. i installedin locations as required in Walkway pads(or pavers as required by the project designer)will be q 3.11 SHEET METAL WORK The Firestone EdgeGard system will be installed(if required in the specifications)in accordance with Firestone Technical Specifications.All other sheet metal work not supplied by Firestone,will be fabricated and installed in accordance with the specifications and SMACNA recommendations.In instances where Firestone requirements exceed the requirements of SMACNA, Firestone requirements will take precedence.
