DnRODUCTION
This report presents the results of an investigation of a room corner fire test con-
ducted according to UBC 17-5 "Room Fire Test Standard for Interior of Foam
Plastic Systems". This document contains a description of the material evalu-
ated, procedures used, and the results. Note that the results listed apply only to
the specimens tested, in the manner tested, and not to the entire production of this
or similar materials, nor to the performance of this material when used in com-
bination with other materials.
This procedure is technically equivalent to Underwriters Laboratories
"Classification of Interior Finish Materials Using a Room Fire Test" (UL 1715),
and PICC 401/March 1980, An Enclosed Room Fire Test," The Society of the
Plastics Industry, Inc.
PROCEDURE
The standard test facility consists of an enclosed 8' wide, 12' long and 8' high
room with walls and ceiling and a doorway 2-1/2' wide and 7' high centered in one
of the 8' walls. When ceilings are included in the evaluation, an 8' square ceiling
must have two edges resting on or adjoining the intersecting wall sections (see
Appendix A, Fig. 1). All vertical or horizontal joint details must be representative
of those intended for use in field conditions. The remainder of the interior of the
room is constructed of gypsum wallboard screwed to 2" x 4" metal studs. The test
structure is located inside a building which is free of excessive drafts.
The fuel source is a wood crib constructed of 1.5" x 1.5" sticks of white fir cut into
15" lengths. The crib must have a dry wood weight of 30 lbs. and be 15" square in
plan. One 8-d nail is driven at each intersection of two sticks. The , crib is
assembled in tiers of five sticks each with each tier oriented 90 degrees to. the
sticks in the adjacent tiers. Prior to placement in the test room, the crib is
conditioned until the moisture content is 8 percent or less.
The crib is placed on four brick pieces, one under each corner of the crib, to
provide not less than a 3" space between the floor and the lower surface of the crib.
Project No. 12480-93842 July 1, 1992
Patio Enclosures Inc. Page 2
Ignition of the crib is accomplished by evenly distributing 1 lb. of shredded and
rfluffed wood excelsior beneath the crib over a 21" x 21" area and soaking with 4 oz.
of ethyl alcohol.
A minimum of four 24 ga. Type K, Chromel-Alumel thermocouples are utilized
for temperature measurement in the test room. The placement of these
thermocouples is shown in Figure 2 in Appendix A. Documentation of the test
consists of 35mm color prints, color video tape and thermocouple data.
Temperature readings on all thermocouples are taken prior to the start of the test
and continued at 15 second intervals to the completion of the fire exposure.
A wall or ceiling material is judged as having met the requirements of the test
standard if it meets the following criteria:
1. Charring of the foam plastic shall not extend to the outer extremities of
the test area within a 15 -minute period after ignition of the excelsior.
Discoloration extending not more than 114"' into the foam plastic shall
not be considered as charring.
2. Smoke levels generated during the test period shall not be excessive.
S. Structural panels shall sustain the applied load during the test period.
TEST SPECDMq
The panels used to construct the room ceiling panel were identified as 6" Insul-
Roof insulating panels. The foam cores used were nominal 1.5 PCF expanded
poly -styrene foam and the sheet metal skins were .024" nominal thickness
aluminum. The adhesive used to attached the skins to the cores was a one -part,
moisture -cured urethane. The I -beams that formed the panel -to -panel joints
consisted of two extruded aluminum T -beams joined together with an extruded
plastic spline (Fig. 5, Appendix A). A tab/hanger bracket was mounted on the
right side of the assembly to facilitate mounting to the side wall of the room (Fig.
4, Appendix A). Extruded aluminum fascia were used to cap the panels on the
remaining three sides (Fig. 6, Appendix A). The overall size of the ceiling
assembly was 9' square. The ceiling assembly covered a 8' square section of the
r y

room with the remaining length overhanging the back: and lett side walls. A
view of the completed ceiling assembly may be found in Appendix A (Fig. 3).
Installation procedures followed are described in Appendix A (Construction
Sequence).
The remaining wall and ceiling sections were constructed of 5/8" type X gypsum
wallboard screwed on 12" centers to standard 2" x 4" metal studs placed every 24".
The interior dimensions of the room were 8'x 8'x 12' as specified in the standard.
TEsrxESUnas
The test was begun at 10:00 am, June 19, 1992, with Mr. Joseph Hetzel, of Patio
Enclosures, Inc., in attendance. The ambient temperature was 84°F with a
relative humidity of 70%. The thermocouples were positioned in accordance with
the standard and their outputs verified after connection to the data acquisition
system. The wood crib used in this test had the following properties:

Additional Observations
Insulated panels on the ceiling had no after -flame.
The paint on the ceiling was blackened in an area extending roughly 4' from the
corner along each wall. The paint was consumed in a small area (roughly 1'
square) directly above the crib. The metal skin of the panels was warped in an
triangular area extending to the extremities of both the back and side walls and
approximately 2' along their adjoining walls. A diagram of these damaged areas
may be found in Appendix D (Fig. 7).
After removing the sheet metal skins from the panels, the damage to the foam
cores could be observed. The EPS was completely consumed and the underside of
the upper metal skin was discolored in an area roughly 2' square directly over the
crib. The EPS foam was still intact and slightly melted along the two overhanging
sides of the ceiling assembly. About 1/4" of EPS was left; in an area extending,
from 4" beyond the corner, 3-1/2 to 4' along both corner walls. Approximately 1-
1/2" of EPS remained in the area from the aforementioned section roughly 6-1/2'
along both walls. The remaining area was left with a thickness of about 3 to 5" of
EPS. Several small patches of completely undamaged EPS foam existed along the
right side wall and the front of the ceiling assembly. A diagram of these damaged
area may be found in Appendix D (Fig. 8).

At no time during the test did liquified EPS enter the testing chamber. No drips,
flaming or otherwise, were noted inside the room. No burnthrough was present
on the sample and the outside surface of the corner remained cool throughout the
duration of the test.
CONCLUSIONS
The test was completed with the entire ceiling visible at all times after the first
minute. Smoke generation during the first minute was due to the excelsior
material and the wood crib. Minimal damages as described above occurred. The
smoke level was low.

INTRODUCTION:
I
This report represents test results on a material submitted for testing by
Patio Enclosures, Inc., of Macedonia, Ohio.
The test was conducted in accordance with the American Society for Testing
and Materials Standard Test Method for "Surface Burning Characteristics of
Building Materials," E 84-90, also known as the Steiner Tunnel Test. This
method is similar to ANSI 2.5, NFPA No. 255, UBC No. 42-1, and UL No. 723.
This method has been approved for use by agencies of the Department of
Defense and for listing in the DoD Index of Specifications and Standards.
The E 84 standard should be used to measure and describe the properties of
materials, products, or assemblies in response to heat and flame under
controlled laboratory conditions. It should not be used for the appraisal,
description, or regulation of the fire hazard or fire risk of the materials.
No consideration is made for results that may be obtained if the material
being evaluated were tested in combination with other materials.
In the light of present knowledge, fire performance of any material cannot
be evaluated on the basis of one test. However, results of this test may be
used as one element of a fire risk assessment that takes into account all of.
the factors which are pertinent to an assessment of the fire hazard of a
particular end use.
These test results represent only the sample tested and are not necessarily
indicative of apparent identical or similar materials. .All test data are on
_ file and available for review by authorized persons.
PURPOSE:
The purpose of this test method is to determine the relative burning
behavior of a material by observing the flame spread along the surface of
the specimen. It is intended to provide comparative measurements of surface
flame spread and smoke development of materials with that of select grade
red oak and inorganic fiber .reinforced cement board under specific fire
exposure conditions. The test exposes a nominal 24 -feet long by 21 -inches
wide specimen to a controlled air flow and flaming fire adjusted to spread
the flame along the entire length of a red oak specimen in 5} minutes during
a 10 -minute test duration while flamespread over its surface and density of
the resulting smoke are measured and recorded. Test results are calculated
relative to the red oak specimen, which has an arbitrary rating of 100, and
the cement board, which has a rating of 0. The test results are expressed
as Flamespread Index and Smoke Density. However, there is not necessarily a
relationship between these two measurements.
TEST PROCEDURE:
The test specimens, selected and identified by the Client, were conditioned
to equilibrium in an atmosphere with the temperature maintained between 69°F
and 73°F, and the relative humidity between 47 and 53 percent. The zero
iiiiill
..j
reference and other parameters critical to furnace operation were verified on
4^ the day of the test by conducting a 10 -minute burn using J -inch cement board.
Periodic tests using NOFMA certified select grade red oak flooring provided
data for the 100 reference. The material were then tested in accordance with
test method procedures.
TEST SPECIMENS:
Identification: Aluminum over EPS
Composition: Aluminum covered EPS panels consisting of Falcon
Manufacturing 1.5 lbs/ft9 density EPS covered on both sides with
Nichols Homeshield 0.024 -inch aluminum 3105-H174. The aluminum is
adhered to the EPS with Morton Thiokol Mor -AD Adhesive. Finished
thickness of the panels is nominally 3 inches.
Mounting: The panels as received were physically self-supporting
and required no additional sample preparation. The panels were
placed onto the ledges of the tunnel furnace and the test conducted
as specified in the E 84 standard.
TEST RESULTS:
Test results, calculated on the basis of observed flame propagation and the
integrated area under the recorded smoke density curve, are presented below.
In recognition of possible variations due to limitations of the test method,
the results are rounded to the nearest number divisible by five. Data for
flame spread and smoke development are shown as solid lines on the computer
generated graph at the end of the report.

Per your request, this is notific:1,
n that your motion for the addition of a three season porch to
your -.own home, presented at June 1993 Homeowners Meeting was passed.
The riotion was presented with t ,- assurance that the porch would conform to the current
buildi.Ag standards as regards col)r, siding and roofing appearance and general blending with
the current buildings appearance as you describe at the meeting.
Since: the additions made to build ngs in the association are not covered by the normal
mainu nance, I would suggest that you would "add" the porch to future scheduled work which is
plann:d by the association such ads painting and normal maintenance, This may be done by
costa: ting the maintenance chairtlerson (me for now) when association work is scheduled, get
the n erne of the contractor doing the work for the association, and arranging to have your work
done it the same time, at your exicnse. This is usually more cost effective for you.
Enjo). your new porch.
