Suite 202 Minneapolis, Minnesota 55415 At your request, I have completed my review and analysis of the roof trusses which you built for the addition to your residence. According to the diagram which you provided, the trusses can best be described as 'conn' trusses, with approx. 6:12 top chord pitch. The top and bottom chord and web framing members are 2x4 construction. Gusset plates are indicated as 1/2" plywood both sides of each joint, fastened with PL -400 adhesive and staples. The trusses are spaced at 24" o.c. with a clear span of 19'-10". The top chord extends at each end for a 24" overhang. According to my calculations, based on a design load of 15 psf dead load and 40 psf of snow load; the overall truss configuration and construction of the gusset plates is structurally acceptable except at the end bearing detail. The gusset plates shown at these locations do not have adequate x -sectional area to transmit the loads in shear from the sloped top chord members and need to be reinforced. I recommend that the existing gusset plates at each end be left intact and additional plywood reinforcing plates be added directly in front of the these plates. I recommend 5/8" or 3/4" plywood gussets (approx. 6" x 12"), (each side) at each end of the truss. The reinforcing plates should be glued with PL -400 adhesive and either stapled (8 min.) or nailed (4-6d nails min.) into each member. If there are any questions or comments feel free to contact me.
