INTRODUCTION
This report concerns the recent inspection our firm performed of the soil conditions at
the above referenced project. Authorization for the work was received from Mr. Dick Brama
on March 26, 193.
No deep soil penetration borings were put down for this construction. However, according
to our available geologic information, the surficial soils in the area are wind deposited
sands associated with the Grantsburg Sublobe of the Wisconsin stage of glaciation. As
the water table fell during glacial retreat, the exposed sands were blown into low sand
dunes. First bedrock at the site would be the Prairie du Chien formation at a depth of
150' to 2001.
We understand the building will be a three-story, slab -on -grade structure. The structure
will be supported on continuous spread footings designed -to rest on soil having an allow-
able bearing capacity of 2500 psf. Information concerning finished floor and footing
elevations were not available to us.
The foundation plan is to carry the footings down through any inferior soil and construct
them on adequate bearing natural soil, as determine by our on-site inspection.
INSPECTION PROCEDURES
Our inspection consisted of visually classifying the soils in the excavation in accord-
ance with the Unified Soil Classification System. Several shallow hand auger borings.
were put down to determine the soil types at depth. In addition, the soil was probed
with a manually operated cone penetrometer. .-The penetrometer is calibrated to indicate
the consistency of cohesive soils and the relative density of cohesionless soils.
Field in-place density tests were performed on the natural sand soils in accordance with
ASTM:D1556-64. These tests were evaluated according to the maximum -minimum relation of
soil as designated by ASTM:D2049-69.
RESULTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
On March 26 , 1973, we made a visual inspection of the excavation. At this time, all
exterior footing areas had been excavated. The footing excavations had been carried
down through silty sand topsoil and/or sand fill to naturally occurring sand and silty
sand. The fine-grained sand was exposed in the major portion of the footing areas and
was brown in color. The silty sand was exposed for a distance of 70' in the north and

south wall footing excavation. Both pockets of silty sand occurred about 28' west of
the east wall and continued to a distance 98' west of the east wall. The sides of the
excavations, where the silty sand occurs, consisted of 3' to 4' of sand fill overlying
silty sand topsoil. This area probably resulted from the filling of a local natural
depression. The silty sand would be a zone of weathered soil occurring just below the
topsoil.
Our penetrometer soundings and two relative density tests indicate the sand is capable
of supporting the designed unit loading. The results of the relative density tests are
attached. We did recommend, however, that all exposed sand areas be surface compacted
with a fairly he4vy vibratory compactor, to densify any isolated loose zones.
The penetrometer soundings indicated the silty sand was relatively loose. Because
the silty sand extends to depths of about 4' in some areas and was somewhat wet, it
was mutually agreed to reduce the soil bearing pressure in these areas, as opposed to
surface compaction.
Mr. Ben Pflagen of Bryant -Franklin Corporation, indicated the footings would be widened to
3', thus, reducing the unit loading to about 1500 psf. It was our understanding the 3' wide
footing would be utilized for a distance of 85' in both the north and south footing areas -
throughout the center portion of the proposed building.
Mr. Pflagen indicated that he was going to construct the exterior walls to grade,
backfill and then prepare the interior soils for footings and the slab -on -grade. At
this time, we pointed out the old fill area probably crosses the entire building area.
As a result, we recommend the interior footing areas be inspected prior to their
construction.
REMARKS
Because no deep soil penetration borings were put down for this construction, we cannot
warrant conditions below the depths of our hand auger borings. However, based on our
knowledge of the surficial soils in this area, the likelihood of inferior soils occurring
at depth is quite remote.

Gentlemen:
On May 4, 1973, we performed a visual inspection and three compaction
tests on the soil exposed in the interior at the above referenced
project.
The structural details of the construction and information pertaining
to the surficial soils at this site were outlined in our report
#9-4416, dated April 17, 1973. As indicated in this report, the
exterior walls were to be constructed to grade prior to preparing
the interior soils.
At the time of this recent inspection, the interior was at footing
grade. Interior backfill and utility lines had been placed. It is
our understanding the area had been surface compacted with a heavy
vibratory compactor prior to placement of the utility lines. Also,
additional compaction was applied with a turtle type compactor after
completion of the utility line placement.
As indicated in our previous report, an old fill area crosses the
center portion of the building. Our recent hand auger borings in
this area indicated the old fill consists mainly of silty sand. The
fill density was checked with a manually operated cone penetrometer.
The penetrometer soundings and a compaction test indicated the silty
sand fill was capable of supporting the 2500 psf design unit loading.
Also, the natural soils exposed at the east and west ends of the
building appeared quite dense. The results of the compaction test
are attached.
Penetrometer soundings and compaction tests indicated the interior
wall backfill and the soil placed in the utility trenches was looge.
