ASSIGNMENT Ulteig Engineers Inc. (UEI) has been retained to provide a structural engineering review of the proposed foundation modification at 6280 6th St. NE, Fridley, MN, as directed by Todd Fisher. BACKGROUND The homeowner, Todd Fisher, wishes to increase the height of the existing foundation wall to provide better positive drainage away from the residence, and add new steel headers to replace portions of the existing bearing walls. The City Building Inspections Department wishes to have an independent structural engineering review of the foundation wall addition and new framing in existing residence. OBSERVATIONS AND COMMENTS 1. The following information was obtained through a site inspection on March 26, 2004 by Jason Hanlon, of UEI: a. The existing foundation wall is constructed with (10) courses of 12 -inch concrete masonry units. C. The roof framing spans 22 -feet and bears on the exterior walls. d. The ceiling rafters and floor framing span 11 -feet and bears on a center bearing wall and the exterior walls. e. A 16 -foot long by 14 -wide addition is located on the west side of the home. 2. The following modifications are proposed by the homeowner: a. The 16 -foot existing wall adjoining the addition to the original home is to be replaced by a steel beam supporting a header point load approximately 1 -foot off the center along with main floor framing from the original and addition sides of the home. b. A 23 -foot and 10 -foot section of the center wall bearing is to be replaced with steel beams. A 5 -foot wall section shall remain between the two beams. C. Add (3) courses to the top of the existing foundation and increase the exterior grade to provide positive drainage away from foundation walls. STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS 3. A structural engineering analysis was completed and the following items are noted: a. The 23 -foot span shall be a W1 6x26, or W1 4x34, or W12x40 A36 steel beam supported by a 3 -inch diameter standard steel pipe columns on a 2 -foot 6 - inch square by 8 -inch thick pad footing reinforced with (3) #4 bars each way. b. The 16 -foot span shall be a W12x22 A36 steel beam with 4 -inch minimum bearing on a grouted solid core. C. The 10 -foot span shall be a W8x10 A36 steel beam. d. See attached detail (Sheet S1) for foundation wall modification. PROFESSIONAL OPINION 4. It is my professional engineering opinion that: a. The steel beams will be structurally adequate for there given spans. b. The foundation walls will be structurally adequate with the corrective measures in place. GENERAL 5. The information, observations, and opinions stated in this report are based on an inspection made by Jason Hanlon.
