The conditions contained herein shall be considered as requirements for the proposed project. A written response
or additional documents may be necessary and are due prior to completion of the Final Inspection and approval for
issuance of the Certificate of Occupancy or Fire Department permit completion. You may contact the Office of the
Fire Marshal at (763) 572-3621 for additional information.
1. Demolition and construction activities shall be governed by requirements of 2007 MSFC Chapter 14, Fire
Safety During Demolition and Construction, and NFPA Standard 241 (2000), Standard for Safeguarding
Construction, Alteration, and Demolition Operations.
2. Install emergency egress illumination in the means of egress including exit discharge compliant with 2007
MSFC Section 1006, Means of Egress illumination.
3. Install compliant exit signage as required. (2007 MSFC Section 10 11)
4. Provide and install dry chemical fire extinguishers certified for service as required - minimum 2A
classification rating and maximum travel distance of 75 feet to extinguishers. (2007 MSFC Table 906.3(1).
5. Portable fire extinguishers shall also be installed in an unobscured, unobstructed location. If view of fire
extinguisher is obscured or obstructed, approved fire extinguisher signage shall be installed to identify fire
extinguisher location. (2007 MSFC 906.5 and 906.6)
6. When mounted in exit passageways or corridors, extinguisher mountings or cabinets shall not obstruct the
egress path by more than 4 inches. (2007 MSFC Section 1003.3.3)
7. Fire extinguishers shall be installed so that the top of the extinguisher is not more than 60 inches above the
floor if 40 pounds or less gross weight. If the extinguisher has a gross weight exceeding 40 lbs, the
extinguisher shall be installed with the top not more than 3-1/2 feet above the floor. The minimum
distance above the floor shall be not less than 4 inches. (2007 MSFC 906.9)
8. Provide information concerning interior finish materials used for this project. Interior finish materials shall
be classified as required by 2007 MSFC Section 803 as to flame spread and smoke development
characteristics. Interior wall and ceiling finish shall have a flame spread index not greater than that specified
in 2007 MSFC Table 803.3 for the group and location specified.
9. The required fire -resistance rating of rated construction shall be maintained. Openings through rated
construction for the passage of wiring, sleeves, conduit, piping, etc. shall be protected by repair with
approved materials which maintains the rating of the construction damaged, altered, breeched or penetrated.
(2007 MSFC 703.1)
10. Storage of combustible materials in buildings shall conform to provisions of 2007 MSFC Section 315.
Applicable provisions include:
a. Ceiling clearance: Combustible storage shall be maintained not more than two feet below the
ceiling. (2007 MSFC 315.2. 1)
b. Combustible materials shall not be stored in exits or exit enclosures. (2007 MSFC 315.2.2)
C. Combustible storage in boiler rooms is not permitted because these rooms are not equipped with an
approved automatic fire -extinguishing system. The only exception applies to materials necessary for
maintenance or operation of the equipment therein. To apply this exception, please furnish the
BTU input for the fuel fired equipment located inside the room and maintain required clearances.
11. What are required clearances to walls for water heaters and boiler located inside room0 These clearances
must also be maintained.
12. A final inspection is required for this project.
