Here is the sequence of events regarding the property a , 7th 8treet.-
Mr. Granger came in some time ago for information on sewer and water connections for theis property. We provided him
with the as -built information we have on file - this is standard practice. We do not guarantee the information and warn the
builder to verify it in the field.
Mr. Granger came back later with his house survey when he was preparing to build. He asked how deep the sewer
connection was. The information on the sewer plan stated the sewer invert was at 846.12 ft and the information on his
house survey stated the sidewalk elevation was at 854.7 ft. From this we showed him that the sewer depth should be
about 8 1/2 feet deep at the sidewalk.
When the sewer connection was being done, Mr. Granger came to inform us that the sewer stub was not at the depth we
specified. I met with him on site. The contractor doing the work explained that the service form the house came out too
low to connect to the sewer stub. It was not exposed at the time and no one ever verified the exact elevation of the stub.
At that time, before lunch that day, I explained that the main line sewer was 3 feet farther out and 2-3 feet deeper and
would work. It would not require any excavation in the street and he had permission to connect directly to it. The "Gopher
State One -Call" marks were still clearly visible on the ground showing the location of the mainline. They chose not to do
the work at that time.
On October 3, the owner of the contracting outfit doing the utiltiy connections called and asked how to connect to the
sewer. I gave him the same information. He later went back and completed the work. A direct tap into the top of the 15
Corrugated Metal Pipe mainline sewer that had been Insituform lined a few years ago. Our personnel inspected the tap
and there were no problems.
One of my concerns on the whole thing is if it would have worked in the first place. The top of the basement slab was at
848.5. The bottom to the slab is then 848.0. The bottom of the footings would then be 847.0 The sewer stub was 50 feet
from the front of the house. Sewer services are run at a minimum slope of 1/4" per foot. That equals 12.5". If the top of
the 4" service was actually touching the bottom of the footing at the front of the house, the bottom of the pipe was 846.66
and after 50 feet the bottom of the service pipe would be at 845.6 - lower than the information on the stub provided. It
wouldn't have worked anyway. We gave him the best solution to a problem of his own creation.
Let me know if you need more information.
