RESIDENTIAL LOTS PROJECT: LOTS 3 - 5, BLOCK 1 DATE: March 22, 1972 53RD AVENUE NORTHEAST & MAIN STREET REPORTED TO: F DLEY, MINNESOTA FURNISHED BY: el r. James Lund COPIES TO: 7709 Northeast Woodlawn Drive Minneapolis, MN, 55432 LABORATORY No. 9=3731 INTRODUCTION This report concerns the recent soils investigation we performed at the above referenced site. The site topography is relatively level with a 2' elevation difference between the street and the rear of the area. The surficial geology of the area is generally defined by granular outwash materials with surface alluvial deposits in depression areas. We understand the irregular shaped trapezoidal area was site graded 10 to 15 years ago. At that time a considerable quantity of fill was placed. Presently there are plans to construct three, one-story single family dwellings at the site. Prior to the initiation of these construction operations, we were requested to perform a preliminary soil investigation. Based on this investigation, we were requested to offer general recommendations concerning the feasibility of constructing the proposed residences. INVESTIGATION On March 20, 1972, we put down four hand auger borings at locations illustrated on the attached sketch. The depth of the borings varied from 7' to 121. Because of the method of sampling, the determination of the extent and consistency of the various soil layers is somewhat approximate. In addition to the hand auger borings, we employed a- hand penetrometer to aid in the evaluation of the relative density of the fill material and the consistency of the natural soils encountered in the borings. The hand penetrometer relates the compressive strength or bearing capacity of soil from its resistance to be,penetrated by a special steel tipped probe. At boring Tocations 1, 2, and 4,we encountered 5' to 8' of generally fine-grained brown sand fill. Our penetrometer readings indicated the fill was consistently in a relatively dense state. The underlying natural soils at these boring locations varied from at least 2' of black, medium consistency silty clay in boring #4 to at least 4' of soft to medium consistency clayey silt in boring #1. In boring #2, the underlying soils included a 6” black silty sand layer underlain by 1.5' of gray, medium consistency silty clay and then at least 1' of reddish -brown, fine-grained sand. 'In boring #3, we encountered granular soils consisting of a 2' layer of black silty sand underlain by brown, fine t4 medium -grained sand and silty sand. No ground water was encountered at the boring locations. However, surface drainage in the AS A MUTUAL PROTECTION TO CLIENTS, THE PUBLIC AND OURSELVES, ALL REPORTS ARE SUBMITTED AS THE CONFIDENTIAL PROPERTY OF CLIENTS, AND AUTHOR- IZATION FOR PUBLICATION OF STATEMENTS, CONCLUSIONS OR EXTRACTS FROM OR REGARDING OUR REPORTS IS RESERVED PENDING OUR WRITTEN APPROVAL. 645-3601 TWIN CITY TESTING AND ENGINEERING LABORATORY, INC. ANALYSIS PAGE: 2 to become quite moist. In addition, the vicinity of the fill -natural Based on our investigation, it is our opinion that from the point of view of the existing soil conditons it would be economically feasible to construct single family structures at the site. Except at boring_#3, in the southeast portion of the site; the granular fill appears quite uniform and is in a relatively dense state. Assuming our borings are re- presentative of the fill condition throughout the site, the fill should not undergo detrimental setttlement under the relatively light unit loadings of the proposed structures. As noted in the investigation section, we encountered considerable depths of black cohesive clays and relatively soft silty clays and clayey silts at nearly all boring locations. In generally, the depth of underlying cohesive material appeared to increase from south to north. The natural soils have been consolidated under the weight of the 5' to 8' thickness of fill material for a period of 10 to 15 years. However, the presence of these somewhat marginal soils does necessitate .placing the structural foundations a vertical distance above the natural soils equal to twice the footing width. Assuming a nominal 20" footing width, a minimum 3' depth of fill should be maintained between the bottom of the footing and the underlying cohesive soils. Due to the cursory nature of the present investigation and the variable soil conditions encountered at the boring locations, we recommend all footing excavations be inspected prior to placement of the footing forms. The inspection would be in the form of placement of a number of relatively shallow hand auger probes through the fill material into the underlying natural soils. Although it appears the likelihood of encountering inferior organic soils or extremely soft alluvial soils is somewhat remote, the presence of such soils within the influence zone of the footing would necessiate further excavating. In addition, we recommend surface compaction and density evaluation be made of the fill material in the footingareas within the influence zone of the footings. This evaluation would be in the form of a small number of field density determinations. REMARKS Because the area of the borings in relation to the entire area is very small and because AS A MUTUAL PROTECTION TO CLIENTS, THE PUBLIC AND OURSELVES, ALL REPORTS ARE SUBMITTED AS THE CONFIDENTIAL PROPERTY OF CLIENTS, AND AUTHOR- IZATION FOR PUBLICATION OF STATEMENTS, CONCLUSIONS OR EXTRACTS FROM 09 REGARDING OUR REPORTS IS RESERVED PENDING OUR WRITTEN APPROVAL. #3 0 #40 LOT 5 LOT 4 LOT 3 #2 0 #10 53RD AVE14UE DRAWN BY WK ICHECKED BY BD SOI L TEST BO R I NGS SCALE: NO SCALE J o B No. 9-3731 645-3601 TWIN CITY TESTING AND ENGINEERING LABORATORY. Our report of March 22, 1972, describes the previous grading work performed at this site. In addition, we described the conditions encountered in our 7' to 72' deep hand auger borings. At the time of previous inspection, we were not aware of the exact dimensions, location and depth of excavation of the proposed construction. Therefore, we indicated the necessity for an on-site inspection prior to placement of the footings in the proposed structures. The proposed structure for Lot #3 is a one-story, single family residence 24' by 42' in plan with a full basement. The structure will be supported on continuous strip footings. We have no information regarding the building loads but assume the foundation design was based on allowable bearing capacity of up to 1500 psf. The footings will be located approximately 5' below the existing exterior grade. We understand the foundation plan is to excavate the basement to proposed footing eleva- tion and support the structure on the exposed soils. The purpose of our inspection was to determine if the exposed soils will provide adequate support for the designed unit loadings. INVESTIGATION On March 29, 1972, we performed a visual inspection of the excavation. The exposed soils were visually and manually classified in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System and estimates were made of their strength properties. Several shallow hand auger borings were put down to determine local subsurface soil conditions. Hand'penetrometer readings were performed in the underlying soils. In addi- tion, several in-place moisture density tests were performed in the granular fill material. The density tests were evaluated according to 95 percent of the moisture -density relation of soils as designated by ASTM:D698-70. The results of these tests are attached. In general, the depth of fill increased from west to east. Along the west footing line, the soils encountered in our hand auger borings varied from at least 4' of medium to rather stiff consistency gray silty clay and clayey silt in the northwest corner to 1.5' of fine-grained brown sand fill underlain by at least 3.5' of brownish -gray silty clay of medium to rather stiff consistency in the southwest corner. In the center portion of the excavation, we encountered 2' of fine-grained brown sand fill underlain by at least 3' of brownish -gray medium to rather stiff consistency silty clay. In the east portion of the site, we encountered up to 3.5' of fine-grained brown sand fill underlain by at least 3' AS A MUTUAL PROTECTION TO CLIENTS, THE PUBLIC AND OURSELVES, ALL REPORTS ARE SUBMITTED AS THE CONFIDENTIAL PROPERTY OF CLIENTS, AND AUTHOR- IZATION FOR PUBLICATION OF STATEMENTS, CONCLUSIONS OR EXTRACTS FROM OR REGARDING OUR REPORTS IS RESERVED PENDING OUR WRITTEN APPROVAL. 645-3601 TWIN CITY TESTING AND ENGINEERING LABORATORY, INC. The test elevations varied from 6" to 1.5' below planned bottom footing grade. The test taken at the higher elevation indicated a relative compacted density of 98 percent. The tests taken lower within the sand fill stratum were found to have a somewhat lower relative density of 93 percent. A series of hand penetrometer probes indicated that the decrease in compacted density with depth occurred uniformly throughout the excavation area. RECOMMENDATIONS Based on the results of our inspection it is our opinion that the natural soil foundation system for the above referenced project will adequately support the designed unit loads with no resulting detrimental settlement. With respect to the fill material, we recommend the east portion of the site be surface compacted prior to placement of the footings. The compactive effort should be applied with a vibratory roller or relatively heavy hand operated compaction equipment. Providing the fill is surface compacted, it is our opinion the fill material will be sufficiently dense to adequately support the relatively light unit loading. REMARKS Because no deep penetration borings were performed at this site, we cannot warrant the soil conditions below the depths of our shallow hand auger borings. However, available inform- ation suggests the likelihood of encountering inferior soils at depth is somewhat remote. TWIN CITY TESTING AND ENGINEERING LABORATORY, INC.
