PAUL, MN 55114 PHONE 612/645-3601 REPORT OF: INVESTIGATION OF EXISTING PORTLAND CEMENT RESIDENCE CONCRETE SLAB 1487 64TH AVENUE June 7, 1976 FRIDLEY, MINNESOTA FURNISHED BY: Bob Mi sten 1487 64th Ave COPIES TO: Fridley, Minnesota LABORATORY No. 4-9112 GENERAL: This report presents the results of our recent investigation of the Portland cement concrete porch slab located at 1487 64th Ave, Fridley, Minnesota. We have been advised that an enclosed porch is planned to be constructed on the west side of the above residence. The porch will be placed on the existing concrete, structural slab presently located at about grade level. It is our understanding that recently some question has arisen concerning the load carrying capacity and integrity of the slab construction. As a result, we were requested by Mr Bob Milsten, to thoroughly investigate the slab and determine whether it could safely support the 40 psf uniform loading required by the local building code. CONCLUSIONS: Based on our inspection, it is our opinion that the porch slab will safely support a uniform loading of 40 psf. In our judgment, a sufficient amount of reinforcement steel is present in the concrete slab. According to the owner, the 5" thick topping layer was placed on the original slab about 3 to 5 years ago. Even though this topping has imposed an additional load of approximately 60 psf, no reflective cracking or spalling on either the top or bottom surfaces of the slab has since been encountered. In lieu of the relatively short span of the slab and its reasonably good condition, it is our opinion that the addition of the topping layer acted to increase the stiffness of the construction as well as its shear and flexural strength. INVESTIGATION PROCEDURE: On June 1, 1976, our laboratory conducted a visual inspection of the cast -in-place concrete floor slab located at 1487 64th Ave, Fridley, Minnesota. At the time of our investigation, a small access hole (measuring approximately 24" square) had been established through the south side of the 8" concrete block foundation wall. During our investigation, we visually examined both the top and bottom surfaces of the slab for evidence of corroded reinforcement steel, cracking, spalling and other evidence of distress. In addition, we carefully inspectec the perimeter foundation walls, and the cast -in-place concrete column provided beneath the center of the slab. The size and thickness of the footings beneath both the foundation wall and column were also verified. INVESTIGATION RESULTS: The porch slab measures approximately 14' x 16' in plan dimensions and is approximately 12" in thickness. The slab is supported along its perimeter by 8" thick, load-bearing concrete block walls. We have been advised that the original ... concrete slab was 7" in thickness and.. that at a later date a 5" thick, concrete topping layer was placed. PAGE: Two that this topping layer was approximately 3-5 years of age. An 8" diameter cast -in-place concrete column was provided at the midspan region of the slab. A concrete "drop -panel" measuring about 24" square and 5" in thickness was located at the head of the column. The footing provided for the column measured approximately 20" square. The footing for the perimeter foundation wall extended out approximately 8" from the interior face of the concrete block and was located approximately 6' below the exterior perimeter grade. The soil beneath the footing would be classified as a fine grained, gray sand (SP -SM), an outwash deposit from the Des Moines Lobe of the late Wisconsin Glaciation. During our inspection, we observed that several types of steel had been utilized for the slab reinforcement. The only distress observed in the slab was one hairline crack on the underside of the slab. However, in our opinion, this crack was due to the corrosion of a section of steel conduit located just below the surface. During our investigation, we observed no cracking in either the concrete column or the concrete block foundation walls.
