Fridley Mn. 55432, 612-571-1526 Honorable Mayor William Nee City of Fridley 6431 University Ave. NE Fridley, MN 55432 Dear Honorable Mayor Nee and Council Members: Soon after April 1, 1992 construction will begin for another Habitat for Humanity home on the southwest corner of 71st and East River Road in Fridley. On behalf of the Northeast Suburban Habitat Chapter I would like to request that Habitat volunteers be allowed to place a free-standing Habitat sign on that property beginning April lst or soon after. As you can imagine, Habitat thrives when folks in our community drive by and see work in progress and get involved themselves! The sign normally is 4 foot x 4 foot and has the blue Habitat logo displayed. The enclosed picture is one that was in place in Coon Rapids. The Fridley sign would be very similar. They anticipate construction to begin on April 1, 1992. Michele McPherson will be contacting them for a temporary sign permit to install the sign for a 14 day period, and we will retain a $200 check to insure compliance with the ordinance. This is the same procedure that we used for the sign in Hyde Park. Although they want to retain the sign during construction, the ordinance stipulates a 14 day period maximum. Fridley, MN. 55432 Dear Mr. Wiley: I contacted you by phone today at the request of Mr. Frank Daughenbaugh of the Habitat for Humanity relative to fasteners being used by them in Permanent Wood Foundations being built in your jurisdiction. I am by no means an expert on the corrosion of fasteners in contact with treated wood, however I have extensive experience with treated wood in standards writing and inspection. I do come in contact with the subject of treated wood and fasteners. One instance was a study performed by the U. S. Forest Service on a test foundation located in Athens, GA. Different type fasteners were checked periodically for corrosion over a period of approximately nine years. Surprisingly, a number of nails without protective coatings used only to hold treated plywood to the studs while the test fasteners were installed held up very well over the lifetime of the study. Unfortunately, this study was stopped because of a shotage of funds. I'm trying to locate the data from these tests, which may take some time. Three years ago, as part of an American Wood Preservers' Association task group on preservative penetration I took part in the examination of a 20 year old deck located in Tumwater, WA. The wood was treated with the preservative ammoniacal copper arsenate (ACA) and the exposure was very humid. The common uncoated nails used in the deck were in good condition. After talking with Mr. Daughenbaugh, I contacted a friend with many years experience in treated wood research. He told me the treated wood industry felt for long term safety, fasteners with protective coatings such as hot dipped galvanize or stainless steel fasteners must be used in treated wood foundations.
