We were requested to inspect four (4) test pits that are located within two garage areas that are part of a 29 -unit apartment project. A sketch showing each test pit location, along with soil depths and descriptions is appended. ANALYSIS AND RECOMMENDATIONS Based on soil data obtained from the test pits, it is our opinion that a stiffened edge slab foundation system can be used to support the relatively light loads of the two garages. However, some excavation in addition to site grading is necessary to remove a layer of rooty topsoil that covers the garage and pavement areas. As indicated by the test pits, this will involve excavations below existing surface of approximately 1 to 2.5 feet to get to suitable foundation subsoils. Fill necessary to reach design grade should be an approved sand, free of any foreign material or debris. It should be spread in loose lifts limited to 8" thickness, moisture-conditi and compacted to an average of 92% Maximum Modified Proctor Dry Density, ASTM D-1557, with no individual test values less than 90%. Exposed subsoils that do not require fill should be thoroughly proof rolled before slab placement. A net allowable soil bearing pressure of up to 1500 pounds per square foot may be used for the slab design. The soil conditions have been established at our test pit locations only.
