Fridley, Minnesota Gentlemen: This letter is in response to your request for verification of structural detailing at the above project. Basically, the interior wall dividing the addition is load bearing, helping to support the mass of the roof in conjunction with the end walls. This wall is in turn supported by a steel I beam which is located directly below this wall. The I beam is supported by the foundations. By having this wall support the bulk of the roof load, the need for any type of horizontal bracing (collar beams) was eliminated. This provided the necessary open space required by the owners. I have suggested to Mr. Schulte that some type of lateral bracing be incorporated into the structure of the wall, thereby stabilizing the length of the studs, and minimising the chance of any internal movement of the wall's structure. This, of course, would have no relation to the wall's ability to support the roof - it will only minimize the possibility of problems developing with the sheetrock wall surface.
