Attached Garage option
If you have lap siding, carefully remove it to expose the sheathing where the garage
walls will attach to the house wall. Frame the three walls of the garage as described
above; you Will probably need to use longer studs so the height of the garage eaves Will
match the eaves of the house (you will need to make this adjustment to the materials
list). The end studs of the garage walls must be attached firmly to the house. (See Detail
"V".) If possible, nail through the sheathing into an existing stud; otherwise, remove the
house sheathing and install four separate pieces of 2x6 blocking horizontally between
existing wall studs (one each at the top and bottom, the other two spaced evenly).
Replace the sheathing and nail into the blocking. In either case, use eight 16d nails to
attach each garage end stud.
If your garage attaches to the eave side of your house, lower that portion of the
garage wall which is under the house overhang. Remove any gutters from the eave of
the house during construction; replacing them as necessary after the garage is finished.
If your house has lap siding, install the 2x2 inside corner at the intersection of the
garage and house walls, and butt the siding into it, caulking the joints. If your house has
plywood or other sheet siding, butt the garage siding into the house siding, and cover the
Intersection With two pieces of 1 x4 trim (or whatever style of trim is used on the rest of
the house). keA --EXISTING STUD

FRAMING THE ROOF WALL CONNECTION
The roof system is made up of several components: rafters (they bear the weight o
the roof and transfer it to the walls), the ridge (it provides a nailing surface for the rafters
and helps be them together), wall ties (they keep the walls from spreading apart), collar
ties (they tie the rafters together and helps keep the structure rigid) and sheathing (it ties
all the rafters together and provides a surface for nailing the shingles). Trusses, which
may be used instead of rafters, incorporate all these components (except the sheathing),
Rafters vs. Trusses
Trusses can be used in place of or in combination with the rafter assemblies in some
roofs. Trusses are manufactured off site to your garage specifications. When they can be
used, they have several advantages over "stick -frame" or hand built rafters: they're
strong, relatively fast and easy to erect, can span larger areas without interior support
walls, and fewer trusses may be required because they can be installed at 24 inches on
center. Rafters, on the other hand, require a high level of skill. Calculating the exact
length and angles for the cuts and fitting all the pieces together, is far more difficult than
nailing together stud walls.
Both rafters and trusses must be made to exact dimensions of your garage. While
rafters are constructed at the site (where exact dimensions are readily available), trusses
are built by the manufacturer from measurements taken after the foundation is poured.
Delivery time varies but it can take several weeks.
In many cases, rafters are less expensive than trusses. However, to make a fair
price comparison that takes into consideration the various advantages and disadvantages
of each, consult with your lumberyard.
