Dear Ms. Yarick:
This letter concerns our observati=4 of foundation soil conditions
and existing construction for a proposed addition to your
residence. We understand you propose to construct a 7' X 19'
addition to the front of your residence. Additionally, we
understand during the demoliion operation of the concrete slab
over the proposed addition area, the contracting crew discovered
there was no front footing below the• existing south exterior wall
of the construction. Therefore, you �equested our services to make
recommendations on the methods requlred to "tie the addition
construction into the existing construction.
Based on our observations of the proposed addition area we observed
the soils to consist of fine grained sand. At frost depth the
soils were reddish brown in color and near the surface the soils
were gray. We did not observe any signs of frost heaving of the
existing front of the living room area from lack of a frost depth
footing below the srab. The south end of the slab had a thickened
edge at.the exterior end.
We recommend the exterior footings for the addition be placed at
42" below grade to provide soil cover for frost protection.
Additionally, we recommend the concrete slab for the addition be
doweled into the existing slab on the south side of the living
room. We recommend adding #6 bars which are doweled into the south
side of the existing slab at approximate 4' centers. The dowels
should be placed 3" below the top of the slab and should extend
approximately 12" into the slab. The dowels should extend dt least
1201 into the north side of the concrete slab for the addition.

The north side of the slab for the addition should be thickened to
approximately 6" and it should taper for approximately 18" to meet
the nominal 4" thickness of the addition slab. We recommend the
grading work for the addition slab should not extend loner than the
south end of the slab for the living room. ..
Apparently the construction has had very favorable conditions to
prevent frost heaving of the front bf the construction. We did not
observe any signs of frost 'heaving at the front of the
construction. There was a large roof overhang and good surface
drainage to prevent roof and grpundwater accumulation below the
front of the construction. Additionally, the soils are free -
draining and are not frost susceptible. These conditions have
resulted in satisfactory perforinaAce of the south end of the slab
for the living room to support the exterior wall loadings without
the benefit of a footing.
