Dear Resident:
The City of Fridley has a sign ordinance regulating the display of
permanent signs in all zoning districts, including residential
districts. This ordinance regulates types, sizes, and locations
of signs. The ordinance also requires a permit for all permanent
signs.
On May 29, 1991, I observed a sign advertising daycare. The only
types of permanent signs allowed in residential districts are: (1)
area identification signs of 14 square feet maximum; and (2) wall
signs of 3 square feet maximum (see enclosed ordinance). According
to my records, I have no permit for this sign; therefore, this sign
is illegal.
If you wish to comply with the Sign Ordinance, please relocate your
sign to the wall of a structure or contact me regarding applying
for a variance to the Sign Code.
If you have questions or concerns regarding this matter, you can
contact me at 572-3593. Your prompt response is greatly
appreciated.
Sincerely,
Michele McPherson, B.L.A.

Dear Ms. Wichern:
In May 1991, I sent you a letter stating that your daycare sign
did not meet the City Sign Code and requested that you either
remove the sign or apply for a variance. Following your receipt
of my letter, the City Council met and discussed the issue of
residential signs. The direction I received was that residential
signs need to comply with the Sign Code, or the property owners
should apply for a variance. This letter is to inform you that you
should apply for a variance to continue to maintain your daycare
sign in its present location.
Enclosed please find a variance application and a schedule for the
Appeals Commission. If you have any further questions regarding
this issue, please contact me at 572-3593.
Sincerely,
Michele A. McPherson

SUBJECT: Followup on Residential Signs on East River Road
This is a followup on my memo of May 30, 1991, regarding several
residential signs along East River Road. I inspected the daycare
sign at 6880 East River Road and found that it is still being
displayed. I sent a letter on July 2, 1991, to the daycare
provider regarding the need to apply for a variance.
The other outstanding sign issue is the off -premise, out -of -city
signs currently displayed in the area of 77th Avenue and East River
Road, as well as Osborne Road and East River Road. I contacted the
BelRae Ballroom regarding the need to remove these signs. They
contacted me and provided me with the number of the company
responsible for installing these signs. I will send a letter to
Jensen Posting, the company responsible for these signs, and
request that they be removed.
