The resurgence of the public interest in bicycles has focused the attention of a broad range of public officials on issues posed by the need of safe, efficient and enjoyable bikeway systems. Planning for bicycles has become increasingly important and the need for developing a systematic, practical and comprehensive approach to a full range of bicycle related issues has been given a significant place in federal, state, metropolitan and local programs. On May 30, 1974,the Fridley City Council established a citizen bikeway/walkway study committee to work with the Planning Division to develop a comprehensive bikeway/walkway plan for the City. The Council adopted the Plan on July 7, 1975. When completed, the five-year,five-stage bikeway system will consist of 15 interconnected trails joining all residential areas in the City of Fridley to parks, schools, shopping, and employment areas. The system will stretch 32 miles.
