NEW POLICE PROGRAMS
Around January 1, 1978 Fridley residents will be receiving a special home
mailing describing several new programs to be initiated by the Fridley Police Fi STOP
Department. These programs include the following. V-17
"STEP" Selective Traffic Enforcement Program SIGN
Total losses due to motor vehicle accidents in 1976 in Fridley amounted to
over $1.5 million. The goal of the STEP program is to reduce the total number
of accidents in 1980 by 301/,, of the 1976 figures. Because studies have shown POLLUTION '
that there is an inverse relationship between the number of justified traffic •
tickets issued and the number of accidents which occur, the Fridley Police will
more than double their traffic enforcement efforts. This program is the first
one like it in Minnesota, and the City is slated to receive in excess of $60,000 a ,
in Federal and State grants to help finance the program over a three-year period.
