Who are the kids?
Lois Doody, Director of the North-
west Kinship Program says, "These are
good kids who need extra love.Generally
they are not abusing drugs or alcohol,
but frequently are struggling in school.
Most of the kids are from single parent
homes, where the mother is the only
parent." 7
Boys and girls are referred to Kinship
by a variety of sources, including coun-
selors, social workers, pastors, and
others in the program."The kids have to
want to be in the program," states
Doody,"no one is forced to participate. ` z
Both the parent and the child fill out an 31
application that is used to `match' the
child with a volunteer who will fill the

child's needs."
According to Doody, parents often
need reinforcement on discipline. For
