The reason for our decision to adopt Thermal Remediation technology "•, _

Bed bugs are a blood-feeding insect,about 1/5 inch long. They feed at
night on the blood of sleeping mammals—usually humans.
Bed bugs disappeared from the United States in the 1950s,due to
widespread use of DDT. In recent years,they are experiencing a
dramatic resurgence. And we don't have a miracle cure like DDT to
help us out,this time around.
Bed bugs hide in cracks and crevices in mattresses,box springs,bed
frames,furniture,woodwork,and just about anywhere they can find a
crack at least 1/64"wide. � r
We can treat most of the structural cracks,crevices and voids in which '�
bed bugs hide with conventional insecticides—sprays and dusts.
Mattresses,box springs and upholstered furniture pose a challenge,
since it is impossible to access their inner recesses with conventional
insecticides. In the past,our only option for treating mattresses,box
springs and upholstered furniture was fumigation with phosphine gas.
Fumigation involves a lot of logistical complications,however,not the �r�
least of which is safety. �
Using heat,on the other hand,would be an environmentally low-impact, x...
safe way of eliminating bed bugs from household furnishings. �
It is a fact of practical entomology that insects cannot tolerate
temperatures above 120 degrees F.for more than an hour;therefore, �
heating household furnishings in an enclosed chamber,under secure "
conditions,is considered the"wave of the future"for bed bug control.

Heat treatment is not new,however. Food processors like ConAgra and f �4I�k�`�II��I �,i

Quaker Oats have been practicing it for years,using external heat ������j���t���{�9(,'�,1`' . _
sources to bring the temperature of their facilities to killing levels for j �
routine"heat sterilizations." '���

Plunkett's has participated in heat treatments for such clients as General '� � � � '� '`�
Mills,Chanhassen,MN;and Minot Milling,Minot,ND;and we have '`� A
participated in several heat treatment seminars sponsored by Kansas e
State University.
Installations like the one we propose to use at our Fridley location are '
already in place in the Metro area,and are used to kill insects in pallets
in order to comply with international shipping regulations.
