NEWS FROM SOUTH ST, PAUL
Fridley-TM
ix Members of our Board of;Directors including spouses, visited the
Fridley Senior Center on Friday, November 6. What they saw was astounding
a Chamber Orchestra of 35 to 40 people practicing for their next concert.
There was a tour of the program and they saw ceramics, craft classes, wood
carving, quilting, and a project called "Round-to-it": if they can't
complete a project at home, they are inspired tocomplete it with friends
at the Center, and a "graduation"button is awarded when the project is
completed. The leadership is basically from the seniors themselves who
decide hat they want to do, and their efforts are facilitated by their
director.
Because of the leadership by the participants themselves, Fridley has a
high -quality program that -attracts people, Their funds come from the .Lions
Club, the city, donatarensaidebyrthesmembersiofatherlasses bheynteach,

and active participation of its members, We are finding warm encourage-
ment from each other and becoming well informed by our outside speakers.
The education schedule has had to change slightly only because of speakers

two speakers , A registered dietician from Unity Hospital and Dr. Lori
Robbins, a chiropractor with a special interest. in nutrition will both
present to us . The issue of how to manage a. .healthful diet is becoming
more and more of a question for us consumers . The debate continues between
what has traditionally been "a well-balanced diet" and what we hear about
foods that "cure arthritis" or are toxic + make our symptoms worse. Please
come with your list of questions on January 20 to what I 'm sure will be a
lively debate about the use of something we all must have every day: food.
Apologies are extended because of the change of schedule. But really, who
wanted to be told before Christmas that we shouldn't eat chocolate ? ,

As I watched all of the Lions and Lionesses who were serving the seniors,
there was wonder of how they could do such a wonderful Job and probably
none or few of them with any previous waiter/waitress experience,
to be faced with such a tremendous task would be scary, but they all
tackled their Job and carried it off in rare excellence, I don t think
a lot of the seniors really realize what a good and great thing was done
for them.
Why do they do it? They will never tell, we can only come to our own
conclusions . Perhaps because they enjoy seeing others have a good time,
or maybe they saw the need of people who are older or less fortunate than
they are, There could be many reasons but the one probably uppermost is
their willingness to share their good fortune with others , There is no
greater thought than that .
In concluding, I wonder how many seniors have ever sent a card of thanks
to the Lions to let them know-how much their compassion and thoughtfulness
to the seniors is appreciated.

LIONS CHRISTMAS DINNER
It's a bird, it's a plane, - it's superman -- no, it's The Fridley Lions ,
Once again the Fridley Lions Club and their companion Lioness Club have
surpassed in reality the deeds in imagery of televisions favorite visitor
from another world,
As we come away from this wonderful time that these two Fridley clubs
Provided for the seniors, I couldn't help but wonder How do they do it and
why do they do this highly commendable thing for so many people, Not a
great deal of thought is necessary to recognize that this great dinner and
all of the associative concern did not Just happen or come into being by
Itself. To make an event such as this happen takes many hours of planning,
many hours of work, none of which could be done by people who were not
dedicated to a cause, In the sixteen years that the Fridley Lions and
Lionesses have been providing this special day for the seniors, they have
not faltered once; not even once. And every year these people of the
Lions and Lionesses have strived to make each year better than the last
one: and they succeed,
This year was a big change in location; for thepast fifteen years the
Lions Dinner was traditionally held at Sandees . With more and more seniors
wanting to attend this gala event, space became a factor in the probable
continuance of this great day. Demonstrating their earnest concern and
consideration for the seniors the Lions made new plans each year that made
It possible for them to manage yet another year. By changing to the
Sunshine Place nearly one hundred more seniors were able to enjoy the
Lions Dinner than could attend last year, For the first dinner sixty-two
seniors were guests; this year nearlyfive hundred seniors met in two
sessions and enjoyed a wonderful tabe treat and some very fine entertain-
ment,
The day began with Bob Cook, the Lions Proverbial master of ceremonies
introducing Lion members who were instrumental in planning this eagerly
awaited event, Immediately following Bob's announcements, The Chamber
Singers from Fridley High School favored their listeners with a round of
well sung Christmas carols, Then came the meal, always superb and nicely
Presented along with wine. As soon as the dinner was finished the tables
were cleared and Bob introduced Bob Payton, singer, banloist, harmonica
player and story teller. Payton was great for the seniors, singing songs
of the real old days (how enJo able again after being hidden so long) .
Payton's time seemed all together too short, Right after Santa's visit
and his round of greetings the drawings for prizes began with many lucky
seniors winning some nice prizes and getting Christmas smacks (kisses) .
The day ended with a thanks to us for coming and a round of applause from
the seniors to their hosts and hostesses ,
How do they do it? With lots and lots of work and real dedication, All
of the Lions and Lionesses devote many hours of their time and to many
their time is quite valuable. Some have businesses of their own, which
calls for forfeiture of opportunity that they trade for this time to be
of service to their club. Other members have positions that require
concessions when they take time off to be present when their club needs
them. The ladies of the Lionesses, as home makers and professional
women generally do, always have many things they could be doing but they
too, give their time to this day for the seniors ,
