GO EASY ON SHOVELING
THIS IS THE TIME OF THE YEAR WHEN DOCTORS WARN : IT ' S RISKY TO SHOVEL
TOO MUCH SNOW! YET, SHOVELING, PROPERLY DONE, NEED NOT BE DANGEROUS FOR
PEOPLE IN REASONABLY GOOD HEALTH.
IN A RECENT TEST, A 34-YEAR-OLD RESEARCHER PICKED UP A 5 1/4-POUND SNOW
SHOVEL AND SHOVELED BRISKLY. AFTER FIVE MINUTES, HIS HEART RATE HAD NEARLY
DOUBLED AND HIS BLOOD PRESSURE ROSE SHARPLY . LATER, IN ANOTHER TEST, HE
SHOVELED AN EQUAL AMOUNT OF SNOW BUT USED A LIGHT 2 3/4-POUND SHOVEL . HE
ALSO TOOK PAINS NOT TO THROW SNOW QUITE SO FAST OR QUITE SO HIGH AND FAR:
HALFWAY THROUGH HE PAUSED FOR A 2-MINUTE REST . THIS TIME , HIS BLOOD
PRESSURE AND HEART RATE ROSE ONLY A TRIFLE.
WHEN YOU SHOVEL SNOW, REMEMBER TO OBSERVE THESE POINTERS :
USE A LIGHTWEIGHT SHOVEL. IF YOU LIFT A 5 1/4-POUND SHOVEL 200 TIMES TO
CLEAN A WALK, YOU LIFT 1 ,050 POUNDS OF SHOVEL ALONE . WITH A 2- 3/4-POUND
SHOVEL YOU REDUCE IT BY 500 POUNDS.
* SHOVEL AT HALF THE RATE YOU'RE TEMPTED TO USE . INVIGORATING COLD AIR
MAKES YOU WANT TO SHOVEL FASTER THAN YOU SHOULD . MOST SHOVELERS TEND TO
LIFT SNOW WAIST-HIGH. SCOOP IT ONLY A FOOT OR SO OFF THE GROUND, AND THROW
IT NO FARTHER THAN NECESSARY.
* SPACE OUT THE JOB. DOCTORS SAY IF YOU HAVE A 40-MINUTE SHOVELING JOB,
IT' S BETTER TO WORK 20 MINUTES, REST A FULL HALF-HOUR, THEN FINISH THE JOB.
USE A LONG-HANDLED SHOVEL TO AVOID STRENUOUS, UNNECESSARY BODY BENDING.
BUY TWO SHOVELS, ONE WITH A WIDER BLADE FOR LIGHT, DRY SNOW: ONE WITH A
'NARROW BLADE FOR HEAVY, WET SNOW.
WAX YOUR SHOVEL: THEN WET SNOW WON 'T CLING TO IT.
ABOVE ALL, SHOVEL SNOW WHEN IT' S FRESH. EVERY HOUR SNOW STANDS IT GETS
HEAVIER. IN A PROLONGED STORM, IT'S BEST TO SHOVEL TWICE BEFORE THE SNOW
GETS PACKED. GET IT, TOO, BEFORE RAIN FALLS . RAIN-SOAKED SNOW CAN GET
INCREDIBLY HEAVY. A SINGLE SHOVELFUL HAS BEEN FOUND TO WEIGH TEN POUNDS ..
THUS, A SHOVELER (USING A 5-POUND SHOVEL) WHO LIFTED ONLY 200 SHOVELS FULL.-
LIFTED
ULL,LIFTED 3,000 POUNDS - A TON AND A HALF - IN A SHORT TIME . THAT ' S A.
STAGGERING AMOUNT OF HARD WORK.
MONTHLY BLOOD PRESSURE TESTS
FREE BLOOD PRESSURE TESTS ARE OFFERED AT THE FRIDLEY SENIOR CENTER, ROOM
10, 6085 7TH STREET. THE FEBRUARY SCHEDULE IS :
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 3RD. . . . . . 11 :30-12:00 NOON

NEWS RELEASE
SHARE-A-HOME IS A PROGRAM WHICH MAKES IT POSSIBLE FOR PEOPLE 55 AND
OLDER TO STAY IN THEIR OWN HOMES BY PROVIDING LIVE- IN PERSONS TO PERFORM
HOUSEHOLD CHORES AS WELL AS PROVIDE SECURITY AND COMPANIONSHIP . MOST
RETIRED PEOPLE WOULD MUCH PREFER TO STAY IN THEIR OWN HOMES AS LONG AS
FEASIBLE AND SHARE-A-HOME PROVIDES THE MEANS.
SHARE-A-HOME, THROUGH A SERIES OF IN-DEPTH PERSONAL INTERVIEWS, MATCHES
HENNEPIN AND RAMSEY COUNTY SENIOR HOME OCCUPANTS WITH POTENTIAL LIVE- INS
WHO OFFER THE SERVICES NEEDED . SOMETIMES THE NEEDED SERVICE IS
COMPANIONSHIP AND A SENSE OF COMFORT IN KNOWING THAT THERE IS SOMEONE IN
THE HOUSE NIGHTS . OR, OFTEN THE NEED IS FOR HELP WITH CHORES AROUND THE
HOUSE OR YARD , AND PERHAPS TRANSPORTATION TO SHOPPING AND DOCTOR
APPOINTMENTS . SOMETIMES THE RESIDENT NEEDS A MONTHLY CONTRIBUTION TO HELP
WITH HOUSEHOLD COSTS . SHARE-A-HOME WORKS TO CAREFULLY MATCH PROGRAM
PARTICIPANTS. DETAILED PERSONAL INTERVIEWS, REFERENCES PROVIDED (WHICH ARE
CHECKED OUT) , ROUTINE SEARCH FOR POLICE RECORDS, ALL SEEM TO INSURE THAT
LIVE- IN IS DEDICATED TO BEING A GOOD COMPANION AND FRIEND. ABOUT THE ONLY
THING SHARE-A-HOME LIVE-INS CAN'T PROVIDE IS PERSONAL MEDICAL CARE .
THE COST IS $15.00 EACH FOR RESIDENTS OR POTENTIAL LIVE-INS AT THE TIME
OF APPLICATION. THERE IS NO FURTHER COST UNTIL A MATCH HAS BEEN CONTRACTED
BY BOTH PARTICIPANTS . THIS MATCH COST CAN BE PAID AT THE TIME OF CONTRACT
SIGNING OR OVER A 2-4 MONTH PERIOD.
MANY HOME RESIDENTS HAVE POSITIVE FEELINGS THAT THEY ARE BEING OF
SERVICE TO YOUNG PEOPLE WHO ARE STRUGGLING TO GET STARTED . WHILE THESE
LIVE- IN PROSPECTS ARE OF ALL AGES , MOST OF THOSE WHO APPLY ARE COLLEGE
STUDENTS OR PEOPLE IN THEIR FIRST JOB . MANY SHARE-A-HOME PARTICIPANTS
REPORT WARM FAMILY FEELINGS DEVELOPING SUCH AS A " GRANDMA AND
GRANDDAUGHTER" TYPE RELATIONSHIP.
AS MENTIONED, LIVE- INS ARE OF ALL AGES . MANY 55 OR OLDER, WHETHER
RETIRED OR STILL WORKING, HAVE ACQUIRED SKILLS THAT CAN BE AN EXCELLENT
ADDITION OF GREAT BENEFIT TO A HOUSEHOLD . IT IS DESIRABLE TO MAKE ALL
SENIORS AWARE OF THE MANY BENEFITS OF SHARE-A-HOME.
THE METROPOLITAN COUNCIL STATES THAT 93% OF RETIRED METROPOLITAN
CITIZENS HAVE AN EMPTY BEDROOM IN THEIR RESIDENCE. YET MINNESOTA HAS THE
HIGHEST USUAGE OF NURSING HOMES OF ANY STATE IN THE UNION. RESIDENCE IN A
NURSING HOME USUALLY COSTS $20,000 TO $25,000 PER YEAR. SUPPORT OF NURSING
HOME IS THE BIGGEST ITEM IN THE MINNESOTA STATE HUMAN SERVICES DEPARTMENT,
USING UP OVER HALF OF THEIR BUDGET.
BESIDES HELPING RETIRED PEOPLE TO REMAIN HAPPILY IN THEIR OWN HOMES AND
ASSISTING PEOPLE IN OBTAINING AFFORDABLE HOUSING, SHARE-A-HOME CAN SLOW THE
INCREASE IN TAXES NEEDED TO SUPPORT THE GROWTH OF INSTITUTIONAL CARE. THAT
MAKES A REAL DIFFERENCE TO US ALL!
