THE COVER-UP
OR WHEN M ALIEN INVADES A QUILTING BEE
WITH FEW EXCEPTIONS , WE OLD—TIMERS THAT HAVE TRANSFERRED FROM ANOTHER
HISTORICAL PERIOD OFTEN ENJOY NOSTALGIC REMINDERS OF THAT BY—GONE ERA. ONE
SUCH MEMORABLE SCENE FOR ME HAS BEEN THE MAKING OF A QUILT. THE SCENES OF
MY MOTHER OR EITHER OF MY GRANDMOTHERS WORKING ON QUILTING HELD ME IN A
FASCINATION AND ARE VIVID IN MY MEMORY TO THIS DAY . UNDERSTANDABLY, THE
OFFERS OF HELP FROM A NINE YEAR OLD BOY WOULD NOT BE OVERLY WELCOME, I WAS
RESIGNED TO WATCH AS THE STREWN MATERIAL SCATTERED ABOUT THE FLOOR, SLOWLY
WORKED ITSELF INTO BEAUTIFUL QUILT, WITH THE KINFOLKS HELP . DURING THE
ENSUING YEARS, THOSE SCENES HAVE FLITTED ACROSS MY MIND AND THE DESIRE TO
BE INVOLVED IN MAKING OF A QUILT NEVER LEFT ME.
RECENTLY THE OPPORTUNITY OF REALIZING THAT DREAM BECAME A REALITY . AN
ANNOUNCEMENT IN OUR CHURCH BULLETIN STATED THAT MORE HELP WOULD BE WELCOME
IN THEIR QUILTERS GROUP. THE FACT THAT I WAS TOTALLY INEXPERIENCED AND
WOULD BE THE ONLY MAN GAVE ME REASONS FOR SECOND THOUGHTS , BUT AFTER
TALKING TO ONE OF THE LADIES I FELT ASSURED THAT I WOULD NOT BE EXPELLED IN
SHAME. I WENT AND WAS NOT SORRY.
TUESDAY, 9: 00 A.M. CAME, AND I VENTURED DOWN TO THE ROOM IN THE CHURCH
WHERE THE QUILTING WAS DONE . TWO LADIES, BOTH NAMED LAVERNE, WERE ALREADY
BUSY SETTING UP THE EQUIPMENT AND TAKING MATERIAL OUT OF CLOSETS. SHORTLY,
MORE LADIES ARRIVED AND EACH JUST SEEMED TO FIND A JOB FOR THEMSELVES .
BEFORE I KNEW IT, THE PROJECT WAS IN FULL SWING AND I WAS TYING KNOTS IN A
QUILT. AT THE CUTTING TABLE, LAVERNE, MARGIT, PEARL, BETTY AND VICKI WERE
BUSY CONVERTING MATERIAL ODDS—AND—ENDS INTO VARIOUS SIZED SQUARES . AT
ANOTHER TABLE, MYRTLE WAS SEWING THE SQUARES TOGETHER WHILE NETA WAS DOING
SOME FINISHING WORK ON ANOTHER SEWING MACHINE. JUDITH WAS PRESSING SOME OF
THE MATERIAL TO MAKE IT EASIER TO CUT. ON THE FRAME, ANOTHER LAVERN, VI ,
CARICE, RACHEL AND MYSELF WERE LAYING OUT THE BACKING, APPLYING THE BATTING
AND FINISHED THE SQUARES . THE NEEDLES AND THE YARN BEGAN TO FLY, AND IN
ONLY A FEW MINUTES, THE QUILT WAS READY FOR THE HEMMER. DURING THE TWO
HOURS THAT I WAS THERE, FIVE QUILTS WERE READY FOR FINISHING.
IT WAS A JOY TO BE A PART OF SUCH A RELAXED ATMOSPHERE: THE LADIES ALL
WORKED SO WELL TOGETHER AND WITHOUT ANY SEEMING CUSTODIAL ASSIGNMENT. MOST
OF THE MATERIAL IS PROVIDED BY A NUMBER OF THE LADIES ORGANIZATIONS WITHIN
THE CHURCH AND THE LUTHERN BROTHERHOOD . THE FINISHED QUILTS ARE THEN
DISTRIBUTED TO VARIOUS ORGANIZATIONS THAT MAKE GOOD USE OF THEM WHILE
PROVIDING CARE FOR THE ILL, DISADVANTAGED, AND SOME ELDER PEOPLE .
TO SAY THAT A LIFE—LONG AMBITION HAD BEEN FULLFILLED WOULD NOT BE QUITE
TRUE: SOME DAY I HOPE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE OTHER PHASES OF QUILTING AND
THEN MAKE ONE BY MYSELF — — EVEN IF IT WOULD BE NO BIGGER THAN TO KEEP AN
EASTER BUNNY WARM.
