Senior Options - Metro Senior Federation Convention
For the past fifteen years, the Metro Senior Federation has been holding
a convention that makes it possible for all senior club members to
acquaint themselves with their parent organization and to have a voice
in the_,►-r trigs of the Federation's intent, The 1957 convention held
at the Mpls . Auditorium on. Oct, 19 featured some well-known Congressmen
and a T,V, and screen star ,
Following the welcoming words by Pres. Carl Carlson, thepreliminary
order of business held the attention of the delegates . Shortly after,
Federation officers gave their report , Archie Wilcox, Mn. Senior
Federation President, gave a five minute talk on what the Federation
is doing to help seniors throughout the state. Election of new officers
and incumbents was a very short item as all candidates were unopposed.
The officers were later sworn into office by Hubert Humphrey III,
current State Attorney General , As Carl Carlson was re-elected as
president, he gave a short but stirring message concerning the importance
of seniors building together to secure a better way of life for not only
themselves but for America in general , To top the morning off, a panel
of U , S. Congressmen (Sen, Durenberger, Rep. Penny, Rep, Sabo, and Rep.
Vento) informed their listeners what to expect in future medicare actions ,
The main topic of the discussions concerned catastrophic insurance which
the panel of congressmen assured teh seniors would be uppermost in
congressional consideration.
The convention adJourned at Noon nod the delegates and other guests
numbering more than 1000 sat down to a chicken dinner, Eddie Albert,
a Minnesota native, was the keynotespeaker during the lunch hour .
Albert recounted some interesting times in his days in his hometown
and also revealed his thoughts about mandatory retirement. Albert
believes that our country needs teh experience that seniors have
accumulated in their long lives; it is a shame tout this useful
resource to rest when our country needs, more now than ever, the
advantage of trained minds . Eddie Albert is 79 years old and has no
intention of retiring his talents and encourages all seniors to make their
i
retiring years a useful and satisfying time of life,
After lunch, the hundreds of delegates had an opportunity to view more tha
300 booths where senior related products and services were displayed ,
Just about everything imaginable was open for senior inspection; health
products, health services, recreational, personal, travel, household,
entertainment, educational, and financial assistance. Many booths had
articles to give away, many had drawings, and some gave demonstrations .
The time there went by fast and soon it was time to load up and head on
out - back to Fridley.
There was so much information given out for the day that a complete
report in our newsletter would be difficult tocover, Rest assured that
the Pietro Senior Federation performs as an extremely important function
in obtaining influential recourse for the elderly segment of our nation,
Being a member of the Pietro Senior Federation has many advantages and it
is inexpensive, costing a mere $11 per year for couples and $9 for single.
Not only are members recipients of manyworthwhile services but members
become an important pa t in the continuing efforts to improve the standard
of living for all people who are adyanolsIn their span oic ; 'fe
