Thanks to Esther Campbell for all her help with the our monthly Cribbage Tournaments and the 49er Days Card Tournaments.
With the large crowd we've had for movies,I really appreciate everyone chipping in to help with the popcorn and lemonade.
-Marguerite Gilbert;Chris Gerrety Audrey Rmgdal, and Zona Koermg made the wonderful turkey salad for the Volunteer
Recognition. Sally Woodard, Sig Hart and Pearl Hicks all pitched in the day of the event to make sure everything was nice for
our volunteers. Keith Hart was there taking picture for all to enjoy and Milada Saunders brought in a beautiful floral arrangement
to complement our table. It does take a lot of people to put on a nice event Thanks for helping.
We are fortunate to have a number of community businesses that care about the Fridley Senior Program Door prizes keep coming
in for 49er Days(a complete fist will appear next month). Special thanks this month go out to Schaff Floral for the carnations for
our Outstanding Senior Nominees and Target in Fridley Employees for helping to make the Senior Olympics such a success.
With our very busy schedule in May,special thanks to Sig Halt Zona Koernig, Sally Woodard,Jeanne Smestad,Esther Campbell,
Virginia Horton,Irma Kelly, Marguerite Gilbert and Pearl Hicks for always being on call to help out with center coverage.
20 area youth raked 9 seniors'yards in Fridley. Isn't it nice to hear about the good our youth are doing.
The Bar Association,Anoka County judges and attorneys, also helped by raking 3 yards.

"Fridley Pride City Wide" Clean-Up Week
September 9-16
The Fridley Citizen's Advisory Committee for Clean-up Week has been meeting since January to
plan one of the biggest clean-up projects in the city's history.
Committee Chair, Dean Saba, said, "We are encouraging residents to clean out and spiff up
basements, garages, and yards to give Fridley a 'clean sweep'.
The committee is recommending a very comprehensive curbside pick-up of trash. Curbside items
can include old carpeting, electronics (TVs, VCRs, computers), unusable furniture, brush and
miscellaneous solid waste. Major unusable appliances (stoves, refrigerators, etc.) will also be
picked up at the curb.
Another major curbside pick-up will be for useable items by ACCAP (Anoka County Community
Action Program). This county agency is looking for useable furniture, bedding, matrasses, kitchen
ware, and appliances in working order for needy county residents.
On September 16th, volunteers will staff a drop-off site at Columbia Arena where residents can
bring these items: used oil, tires, flourescent bulbs, car batteries, used and unopened paint, scrap
metal, plus concrete and asphalt products.
Residents can get rid of junk cars during this clean-up week by calling Shortys Towing Service
(784-1411) who will pay a small fee for the cars.
Items that are unacceptable for disposal include yard waste (leaves, clippings, garden debris) and
material normally recycled (cans, glass, corregated cardboard, mixed mail such as paper,
magazines, glossy paper and boxboard including cereal, cake and cracker boxes.
Volunteers are needed to help those in need get bulky items to the curb, staff the Columbia Arena
site, and do many other tasks. Those who need help getting rid of their refuse and individuals or
groups who want to volunteer can sign up by calling the Fridley Hotline number (572-3600). This
clean-up effort is in conjunction with the project Community Pride which stresses the values of
respect, integrity, caring, responsibility, self-control, citizenship and non-violence.

In May, it was my priviledge to recognize all of our hardworking volunteers and to pay special**`
tribute to eight seniors nominated by community clubs and organizations for the Senior of the
Year Award. These individuals,Vivian Baker, Barney Buss, Neta Olson, Bob Persgard,
Corinne Prindle, John Silliman, Gretchen Thompson, and Betty Werner continue to prove
that senior leadership in our community is vital. Each has given their own personal touch into
the lives of many by their efforts. The Fridley Senior Program salutes each of you!
E
49er Days are quickly approaching. There are a number of events to choose from. I hope to
see many of you at each of them. I'd like to take special note of the Concert taking place in the.
City Plaza on Saturday afternoon. This will be the perfect event to share with all our neighbors, {
family, and friends. Hope for sunshine while we listen to the Big Band sound of Sentimental
Journey! NSP is sponsoring this event with a free sandwich provided by Concessions (You P
must be pre-registered for the sandwich coupon).
One last comment. . . we just received a call from Bob's Produce asking if the seniors would be
interested in manning their concession booth on the weekends. We would keep all the profits.
Great deal, hehI We are asking teams of two to commit only one weekend from 10:00am- 1
2:00pm on Saturday and Sunday. If you can volunteer for a date, please call the Senior Center.
All the food will be pre-cooked by Bob's.
